(2) Caroline Wozniacki vs Belinda Bencic
The second semifinal from Devonshire Park sees former champion Caroline Wozniacki take on WTA rising star, Belinda Bencic. Bencic will be aiming to reach her first ever premier level final, whilst Caroline Wozniacki will be looking to reach her fourth final of 2015.
Caroline Wozniacki has made a solid start to her 2015 grass court campaign, gaining valuable match practise ahead of Wimbledon next week. The Dane received a bye through to the second round where she overcame an early scare to defeat Jarmila Gajdosova 7-6 6-2.
Wozniacki was made to work harder for her third round victory over Svetlana Kuznetsova. The Dane let a 5-1 lead slip in the opening set, but recovered to win the match in three sets. Wozniacki’s best performance of the week came in the quarter-finals where she defeated Andrea Petkovic 7-5 6-1, committing just 11 unforced errors in a typically solid victory.
Belinda Bencic has shown maturity beyond her years this week in Eastbourne, overcoming four difficult opponents on route to the biggest semifinal of her career.
Belinda reached just her second premier level semifinal with a come from behind, 2-6 6-0 6-3 victory over Johanna Konta. Bencic remained composed after being outplayed in the opening set, winning 12 of the last 15 games. It is clear that grass is Belinda’s best surface, her flat groundstrokes and abundance of variety work very well on the quicker surface.
This will be the third career meeting between the pair, the head to head record is currently tied at 1 victory apiece. Bencic won their most recent encounter 6-4 6-4 at Indian Wells this year, avenging an embarrassing 0-6 0-6 loss to the Dane in Istanbul last year.
This promises to be an entertaining battle between two fierce competitors. In their first grass court encounter, I think Bencic will have the slight edge. The youngster is able to harder and flatter and has the ability to match Wozniacki’s scrambling abilities.
Prediction: Belinda Bencic to defeat Caroline Wozniacki in 3 sets
