Toronto R2: (4) Caroline Wozniacki vs Belinda Bencic
Caroline Wozniacki and Belinda Bencic will renew hostilities on Wednesday when they go head to head in the second round at the Rogers Cup in Toronto.
Caroline Wozniacki made a disappointing start to her U.S Open series last week in Stanford. The Dane suffered a 4-6 2-6 first up loss to Varvara Lepchenko. Wozniacki was uncharacteristically outplayed and seemed to be hindered by some kind on injury. Question marks remain over the fitness of Wozniacki heading into this event.
Belinda Bencic set up a second round clash with the Dane courtesy of a 6-0 5-7 6-2 victory over Eugenie Bouchard on Tuesday night. Bencic dominated the opening set as Bouchard looked wayward. The Canadian fought back in the second and had all the momentum heading into the third with the Canadian crowd right behind her. Bencic was not to be denied, raising her game to close out the match in impressive fashion.
The head to head record between the pair is split at one win apiece. Caroline Wozniacki humiliated Bencic in a 6-0 6-0 drubbing in Istanbul last year. Bencic avenged that loss in style, defeating the Dane 6-4 6-4 at the BNP Paribas Open earlier this year.
It is Bencic who will enter this match with momentum on her side, Bencic is one the rise having just entered the top 20 for the first time. This is actually a good matchup for Bencic, she can match Wozniacki from the baseline and has a bit more variety in her game. I like Belinda’s chances in this one.
Prediction: Belinda Bencic to defeat Caroline Wozniacki in 3 sets
