Rogers Cup, ??? Championship Preview + Prediction
(6) ?? Caroline Wozniacki vs (5) ?? Elina Svitolina

Sunday’s Rogers Cup final will be contested between Caroline Wozniacki and Elina Svitolina. Wozniacki and Svitolina have had completely contrasting records in finals this year, Wozniacki has lost all five finals she has competed in whist Svitolina has won all four finals she has competed in this year. Svitolina also has the edge in the head-to-head record, the Ukrainian has won both of the previous matches between the pair, including a straight set win in the final in Dubai earlier this year, Svitolina won that match in straight sets and will have a great deal of confidence heading into the final.

Caroline Wozniacki has overcome a tough pathway to reach the final in Toronto. Wozniacki started the event with comfortable straight set wins over Ekaterina Alexandrova and Agnieszka Radwanska Wozniacki’s greatest test came in the quarter-finals where she won a tight three set match against world number 1 Karolina Pliskova. Wozniacki’s typical determination saw her outlast Pliskova to claim a 7-5 6-7 6-4 victory. Wozniacki cruised through to the final courtesy of a 6-2 6-3 over Sloane Stephens.

Elina Svitolina could not have had a much tougher route to the final in Toronto. Svitolina started the event with a straight set win over Daria Kasatkina before cruising past Venus Williams 6-2 6-1. Svitolina showed her trademark fighting spirit by coming from a set down to edge past Garbine Muguruza before confirming her spot in the final with a commanding 6-1 6-1 demolition of Simona Halep.

As mentioned above, Svitolina has won both of the previous matches between the pair. Svitolina claimed an epic three set win over Wozniacki in Miami last year, a match that ended in a deciding set tiebreak. More recently, Svitolina won 6-4 6-2 in the Dubai final earlier this year.

This should be a really close match, both players are in great form and are very evenly matched. Clearly Wozniacki has struggled in finals this year, Svitolina has been the total opposite and did win their only previous match this year. Nevertheless, I suspect Wozniacki will finally break her finals record. Wozniacki usually plays well against counter-punchers and will be extremely determined here given her record in finals all year. There really is nothing to separate the pair, it just seems Wozniacki is due for the win.

Prediction: Caroline Wozniacki to defeat Elina Svitolina in 3 sets

  1. In the CAROLINE WOZNIACKI VS ELINA SVITOLINA finale match, I am kinda torn as I like both of them.

But I am giving 5% edge to Svitolina to win and make their H2H Record 3-0.

SVITOLINA has that overwhelming smoothering power to destroy anyday especially on the HC’s. If she can do to Woz what Svitolina she did to Venus Williams and Halep then Svitolina should win in 2 sets.

POSSIBILITY 2-If Svitolina is very tired from yesterday’s doubles match then this match can go to 3 sets.

Hence, I plan to bet small on Svitolina ML win and on the OVER! maybe one slip with +1.5 Woz if Svitolina zaps out. Did a lot of running and playing yesterday (4sets)!

    • Great win for Svitolina, she was way too good in the end. The stats did all point to a Svitolina win. I just didn’t think Wozniacki could possibly lose another final.. apparently she can.
