Caroline Wozniacki vs Jelena Ostapenko, Roland Garros QF Preview

Roland Garros, ??? Quarter-Final Preview + Prediction
QF #1: (11) ?? Caroline Wozniacki vs ?? Jelena Ostapenko

A fascinating quarter-final at Roland Garros featuring Caroline Wozniacki and Jelena Ostapenko will be battle between two players at the very opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to game style. Caroline Wozniacki is into the quarter-final stage of Roland Garros for the first time since 2008 and her 9th overall at the Grand Slam level whilst Jelena Ostapenko will be competing in her very first Grand Slam quarter-final. Nevertheless, it is Ostapenko that will enter this match with a huge amount of confidence having won all three of the previous matches between the two, most importantly having twice beaten Wozniacki on clay earlier this year. This has the makings of an epic.

Caroline Wozniacki is into the quarter-final stage at Roland Garros just the second time, a great achievement for the Dane given clay has always been by far her least successful surface. Wozniacki’s run to the quarter-finals didn’t look likely when the former world number 1 laboured through her first round match, beating Jaimee Fourlis in 3 sets. Wozniacki smashed Francoise Abanda 6-0 6-0 in the second round before again battling past a much younger opponent, beating Catherine Bellis 6-2 2-6 6-3. The 11th seed booked her spot in the quarter-finals with a surprise 6-1 4-6 6-1 win over former champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, an impressive win for Wozniacki against an opponent that is far more accomplished on the surface.

Jelena Ostapenko arrived in Paris having never reached the second week of a Grand Slam, now the Latvian is into the quarter-final stage where she will meet an opponent that she has an unbeaten record against. Like Wozniacki, Ostapenko got off to a slow start, coming from a set down to defeat Louisa Chirico. Ostapenko brushed that first round scare aside as she went on to comprehensively beat Monica Puig 6-3 6-2 and Lesia Tsurenko 6-1 6-4. Ostapenko’s most impressive win came at the fourth round stage where she came from a set down to defeat former finalist Sam Stosur 2-6 6-2 6-4. Ostapenko has the type of that game that gives her an opportunity to beat any opponent, there is potential for Ostapenko to continue moving through the draw in Paris.

Jelena Ostapenko has won all three of her previous matches against Caroline Wozniacki. The pair have already played twice in 2017, twice on a clay court. Ostapenko defeated Wozniacki 6-2 6-4 in Charleston whilst more recently the Latvian beat Wozniacki 5-7 6-3 7-6 in Prague. Clearly this is a good match-up for Ostapenko, whenever she is able to execute her game she will be too strong for Wozniacki, this match-up is all about Ostapenko.

This looks like Ostapenko’s match to lose. The Latvian has too much power for Wozniacki, especially on a clay court where she has more time to get into the right position and execute her game. However, Wozniacki is arguably the greatest competitor on tour and she will find a way to make this competitive, Wozniacki has experience on her side given she has been at this stage of a tournament on many occasions whilst Ostapenko will be in a totally new situation and it’s hard to know how she will respond. I’m going to side with Wozniacki here, the Dane is tactically smart and will have learned from her loses to Ostapenko, on the big stage when the pressure is on, Wozniacki is more likely to hold strong.

Prediction: (11) Caroline Wozniacki to defeat Jelena Ostapenko in 3 sets
