Caroline Wozniacki vs Kristina Mladenovic, Indian Wells QF Preview

BNP Paribas Open, ??? Quarter-Final Match Preview
(13) ?? Caroline Wozniacki vs (28) ?? Kristina Mladenovic

Caroline Wozniacki and Kristina Mladenovic will do battle in what should be a high-quality quarter-final at the BNP Paribas Open on Thursday between two very in-form players. Both Wozniacki and Mladenovic have flown through to the quarter-finals in Indian Wells without dropping a set, both have reached two finals in the last couple of months prior to this event. Wozniacki has won all three previous matches between the two, but Mladenovic is playing the best tennis of her career, perhaps this is the Frenchwoman’s time?

Caroline Wozniacki has won 12 of her last 14 matches having made the final in both Doha and Dubai prior to arriving at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Wozniacki has been mostly untroubled in her first three matches at the BNP Paribas Open. The Former Indian Wells champion cruised past Magda Linette and Katerina Siniakova in her first two matches before surviving some tough moments to defeat Madison Keys 6-4 6-4. The Dane is in the kind of form where it will take something special to beat her, especially on a surface such as the one at the BNP Paribas Open where Wozniacki has thrived.

Kristina Mladenovic’s start to the 2017 season has easily been the best start to a season that she has made. Mladenovic won her first career title at the premier level St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy and made the final in Acapulco prior to arriving at the BNP Paribas Open. Mladenovic has also been relatively untroubled on route to the final 8. Mladenovic overcome a late challenge from Annika Beck to win 6-0 7-5 in her opening match before eliminating former champion Simona Halep surprisingly easily with a 6-3 6-3 win. The Frenchwoman booked her spot in the final 8 with a solid 6-3 6-3 win over Lauren Davis.

Caroline Wozniacki holds a perfect 3-0 head-to-head record over Kristina Mladenovic, all three victories came on a hard court. The Dane thumped Mladenovic in their first two meetings in 2014, their most recent match was much closer with Wozniacki emerging victorious 6-1 6-7 6-2 in the Hong Kong final late last year.

There is a great contrast in styles between these two. Mladenovic has the flare and attacking game whilst Wozniacki has the defensive weapons to counter the Frenchwoman’s aggressive game. Clearly this has been a good match-up for Wozniacki and I suspect that will continue here. Despite Mladenovic’s great results in recent times she is still erratic throughout matches which is something she can’t afford against Wozniacki. The surface should also suit Wozniacki in this match-up. All signs point to a Wozniacki win.

Prediction: Caroline Wozniacki to defeat Kristina Mladenovic in 2 sets
