Cincinnati R2: (5) Caroline Wozniacki vs Victoria Azarenka
Victoria Azarenka and Caroline Wozniacki will go head to head for the fourth time in 2015 when meet in the second round at the Western & Southern Open on Wednesday evening. The Belarussian has owned Wozniacki this year, winning all three of their matches and all in straight sets. Wozniacki’s recent form suggests she will find it hard to turn things around against Vika here.
Wozniacki is yet to pick up a victory since Wimbledon. The Dane has suffered first up exits in Stanford and in Toronto. Wozniacki started her U.S Open series with a 4-6 2-6 loss to Varvara Lepchenko before suffering a 5-7 5-7 loss to Belinda Bencic in Toronto. Wozniacki has been struggling with a left calf injury and claims she wasn’t ready to play last week but was forced to by the WTA. Wozniacki’s calf has still seemed to be causing her trouble during practice in Cincinnati.
Victoria Azarenka suffered a disappointing third round exit in Toronto last week where she was defeated by Sara Errani in straight sets. However the 2013 Cincinnati champion made a positive start to her Western & Southern Open campaign with a comprehensive 6-1 6-2 victory over Lauran Davis. Azarenka seems to love the conditions in Cincinnati and will be one of Serena’s biggest threats for the title.
Victoria Azarenka will head into this match full of confidence having defeated Wozniacki in their last four encounters and holding a 6-4 head to head record over the Dane. Azarenka has dominated Wozniacki on the hard courts this year, picking up a convincing 6-4 6-2 win at the Australian Open and a 6-3 6-1 victory in Doha. Given Wozniacki’s recent injury concerns, it’s impossible to see the Dane turning things around in this one, Azarenka should record another comfortable victory over Wozniacki on a surface that favours the Belarussian.
