Alize Cornet vs. Shuai Zhang, Roland Garros R2 Preview

🇫🇷🐌 Roland Garros, R2 preview + prediction:
🇫🇷 Alize Cornet vs. 🇨🇳 Shuai Zhang

Alize Cornet comes up against China’s Shuai Zhang at the second round stage in Paris. Cornet is a Roland Garros veteran, the Frenchwoman has played in the singles draw every single year since 2005. Unfortunately for Cornet she has only made it into the second week at her home major on 2 occasions out of her 15 previous appearances. Fresh from a fourth round appearance at the US Open earlier this month it is Cornet who brings the better form into this clash.

Alize Cornet booked her spot in the second round at Roland Garros with a comfortable 6-3 6-2 victory over countrywoman Chloe Paquet. Cornet played one warm-up event on clay prior to arriving in Paris where she stumbled at the second round stage in Strasbourg to the eventual finalist Elena Rybakina in what was a competitive match. Earlier this month Cornet reached the fourth round at the US Open for the first time in her career, the final in major in which she had yet to previously reach the final 16.

Shuai Zhang advanced to the second round in Paris courtesy of a 6-3 7-6 upset victory over the 12th seeded Madison Keys. Zhang has built up some decent momentum on the red dirt in France having come through the qualifying draw to reach the quarter-finals in Strasbourg last week. Roland Garros has traditionally been Zhang’s least successful major, unsurprisingly given clay is Zhang’s least successful surface in general.

Cornet holds a 4-2 head-to-head record over Zhang. It was Cornet who won the most recent meeting between the pair, a 6-2 6-2 victory on grass in Eastbourne last year.

I’m going to side with Cornet here. Clearly this is a decent match-up for Cornet given her head-to-head success over Zhang, I suspect this advantage to be especially true on a heavy clay court. Cornet and Zhang are both solid from the baseline, both move well, Zhang probably has slightly more firepower but Cornet’s far greater versatility is what gives her the edge in this match-up. Cornet’s backhand slice and drop shot will be very useful here, expect Cornet to be too solid at her home major in what should be a close match.

Prediction: Alize Cornet to defeat Shuai Zhang in 3 sets

Madison Keys vs. Alize Cornet, US Open R3 Preview

2020 US OPEN – R3 preview + prediction: ??
?? (7) Madison Keys vs. ?? Alize Cornet

A third round match-up at Flushing Meadows featuring a huge contrast in styles sees the 7th seeded Madison Keys take on Alize Cornet. Keys has surprisingly beaten Cornet in all 3 of their previous meetings, despite the Frenchwoman having the weapons in her game to make life uncomfortable for Keys, Cornet has been in good form of late and will fancy her chances of causing an upset.

Madison Keys will be aiming to reach the second week at the US Open for the 6th consecutive year. The 2017 runner-up has cruised through her first couple of matches without really being tested, a 6/1 6/1 win over Timea Babos, followed by a 6/2 6/1 win over Aliona Zadoinov. The 7th seed will face her first real test of the tournament against Cornet, a far trickier opponent than her previous opponents this week.

Alize Cornet has already had a good couple of good weeks in New York. Cornet won a couple of matches at the Western & Southern Open, including a straight set win over reigning Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin. Cornet started her US Open campaign with a 6/3 1/6 6/0 win over Lauren Davis, followed by a 7/6 6/3 victory over Ysaline Bonaventure. Cornet will be aiming to reach the second week at the US Open for the first time having failed at the third round stage on 4 previous occasions.

Keys holds a 3-0 head-to-head record over Cornet. The most recent match-up between the pair took place at Wimbledon in 2016, Keys won 6/4 5/7 6/2.

I’m going to go for the upset here. I believe this is a troublesome match-up for Keys despite her winning record over the Frenchwoman. Cornet has been playing well over the last few weeks and has the versatility to cause big hitters like Keys to make too many errors. I’m sceptical of Keys heading into this match because she hasn’t been tested in her first few matches and will face a very, very tricky opponent here. I don’t think Keys is prepared for the challenge. Cornet has been moving very well over the last few weeks, if she can get into enough extended rallies, I think she will get the job done.

Prediction: Alize Cornet to defeat Madison Keys in 3 sets

Victoria Azarenka vs. Alize Cornet, CincyTennis R3 Preview

?? Western & Southern Open – R3 Preview + Prediction:
?? Victoria Azarenka vs. ?? Alize Cornet

An unseeded pair go head-to-head for a place in the quarter-finals at the Western & Southern Open when Victoria Azarenka takes on Alize Cornet on Tuesday afternoon in New York. Azarenka holds a dominant 6-0 record over Cornet, can the in-form Frenchwoman finally snatch her first win over the former world number 1?

Azarenka is having a great week at Flushing Meadows. Azarenka has beaten a pair of players she has struggled against in the past, a 6/2 6/3 win over Donna Vekic followed by a 6/2 7/6 win over Caroline Garcia. Prior to this week Azarenka had a 0/5 record against the pair. Azarenka is moving well and striking the ball with authority from the baseline, showing signs of the player that twice reached the US Open finals at this very venue.

Alize Cornet is also on a roll in New York. Cornet started the event with a dominant 6/0 6/4 win over Catty McNally before upsetting the second seeded Sofia Kenin 6/1 7/6. The movement of Cornet has been the standout, especially in her win over Kenin where she was tracking down ball after ball, drawing error after error from the reigning Australian Open champion. An even greater effort will be required if Cornet is to finally defeat Azarenka.

Azarenka has won all 6 of the previous meetings between the pair. 3 of those victories were in straight sets, including their two most recent matches. Azarenka defeated Cornet 6/4 6/4 at Wimbledon last year in their latest encounter.

There’s a reason Cornet has never beaten Azarenka. This is simply a bad match-up for Cornet. Azarenka enjoys these types of matchups where she can’t be overpowered or rushed. Azarenka will be full of confidence heading into this match after 2 big wins this week and has the formula to take care of Cornet. Azarenka is usually too strong for Cornet because she has a cleaner strike off both sides, returns better and has a stronger first serve.

Prediction: Victoria Azarenka to defeat Alize Cornet in 2 sets

Barbora Strycova vs. Alize Cornet, Wuhan R1 Preview

? Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open, R1 Preview
?? Barbora Strycova vs. ?? Alize Cornet

Two of the tour’s most entertaining players will go head-to-head at the opening round stage in Wuhan as Barbora Strycova takes on Alize Cornet. Interestingly it is Cornet who has been fairly dominant in this match-up in the past, Cornet holds a 6-2 head-to-head record over Strycova but heads into this match as the slight underdog.

Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic in action during her third-round match at the 2018 US Open Grand Slam tennis tournament

The pair bring fairly contrasting form into this opening round match in Wuhan. Strycova was in action last week in Tokyo where she played two tough matches, she beat Anett Kontaveit in an epic 3 set encounter before being beaten by Naomi Osaka in straight sets in what was a pretty competitive match. Conversely, Cornet has not won a match since Cincinnati and suffered a strangely one sided first round loss at the hands of Jennifer Brady in Guangzhou last week.

It was Alize Cornet who won the first 5 career meetings between the two, Strycova has won 2 of their last 3 matches. Overall it is Cornet with al 6-2 head-to-head advantage. Their most recent clash was at Roland Garros last year, Cornet claimed a comfortable 6-4 6-1 victory. Strycova has won the last 2 matches between the pair on a hard court.

Alize Cornet vs. Sara Errani, Roland Garros R1 Preview

Roland Garros, R1 Preview
?? (32) Alize Cornet vs. ?? Sara Errani

Alize Cornet and Sara Errani will renew hostilities when they meet at the opening round stage at Roland Garros on Sunday. This is a bit of a grudge match-up, two fierce competitors that don’t particularly like each other. Expect a long, tough battle between these two. Will the Frenchwoman prevail in Paris or will the Italian workhorse be too strong?

Alize Cornet has a long, long history in Paris. For so long Cornet has been the leader of French hopes on the women’s side but that is no longer the case with Garcia and Mladenovic moving past Cornet in the French pecking order. Cornet’s form in the lead-up to Roland Garros has been poor, Cornet was beaten in the opening round in Madrid, albeit a very tough draw against Svitolina and was unable to compete in Rome or Strasbourg. Prior to that Cornet suffered early round losses in Lugano and Stuttgart.

Sara Errani, a former finalist in Paris arrives at this years event with very little expectation. Errani may not be the player that she once was but she still has her competitive edge and desire to chase down every ball. Like Cornet, Errani’s recent form is not great. Most recently Errani suffered an opening round exit in Rome at the hands of Timea Babos and the Italian has a modest 5-5 record in main draw matches on clay in 2018.

Errani holds a 4-3 H2H advantage over Cornet. However, it is the Frenchwoman who has won the last couple of matches between the pair, most recently a 6-3 6-4 win in Rome last year.

This is huge opportunity for both ladies, both will be aiming to reach the quarter-final stage of a Grand Slam for the very first time. Agnieszka Radwanska vs Alize Cornet, Roland Garros R3 Preview

Roland Garros, ??? R3 Preview + Prediction
(9) ?? Agnieszka Radwanska vs ?? Alize Cornet

A blockbuster third round clash in Paris sees the ninth seeded Agnieszka Radwanska come up against Alize Cornet and the vocal Parisian crowd. Radwanska and Cornet have played out a few epic, marathon matches in the past but Radwanska has always had the edge over the Frenchwoman. Radwanska holds a 7-1 head-to-head record over Cornet, interestingly Saturday’s third round match at Roland Garros will be their first meeting on a clay court since 2008, a surface that gives Cornet the best chance of a causing an upset. This should be a very entertaining clash between two of the craftiest players on tour, a fourth round appearance would be huge for both ladies given their struggles throughout the year.

Alize Cornet vs Barbora Strycova, Roland Garros R2 Preview

Roland Garros, ??? R2 Preview + Prediction
?? Alize Cornet vs (20) ?? Barbora Strycova

A fascinating second round clash in Paris sees crowd favourite Alize Cornet come up against the feisty 20th seeded Barbora Strycova. This promises to be a tight battle between two fierce competitors that give very little away, except a lot of long, entertaining rallies in this one. Interestingly, Cornet has a fairly dominant head-to-head record over Strycova (5-2), but Strycova has generally played the better tennis of late, a clay court will suit Cornet in this match-up. This looks like an exciting match…
