Daria Gavrilova vs. Eugenie Bouchard, Roland Garros R2 Preview

??? Roland Garros, R2 preview + prediction:
?? Daria Gavrilova vs. ?? Eugenie Bouchard

A fascinating second round match-up at Roland Garros on day 4 sees Daria Gavrilova come up against Eugenie Bouchard. This is a big opportunity for both players to return to the third round stage of a major for the first time in a while. Gavrilova hasn’t reached the third round stage of a major since Wimbledon 2018, whilst Bouchard hasn’t reached the third round stage of a major since the Australian Open in 2017. A winnable match for both, who will make the most of this opportunity to reach the round of 32 at Roland Garros?

Daria Gavrilova made an impressive return to the tour with a 6/4 6/3 victory over the 24th seeded Dayana Yastremska in the opening round. It was Gavrilova’s first tour level match since the US Open last year, her first victory at a major since the US Open in 2018. At her best, Gavrilova has always been a tricky opponent, especially on clay where her exceptional speed and movement make her a tough opponent to put away.

Eugenie Bouchard’s resurgence continues. Fresh from a strong run to the final in Istanbul, Bouchard made her way through to the second round in Paris with a 6/4 6/4 win over Anna Kalinskaya. Bouchard has been grinding away on the European clay since the tour restart with promising results, a quarter-final run in Prague came before she won 6 matches on route to the final of the Istanbul Open earlier this month.

Bouchard holds a 2-1 head-to-head record over Gavrilova. However, the pair haven’t met in over 7 years, so their previous encounters are mostly irrelevant. It was Gavrilova who won their most recent match, a 7/6 7/6 victory at the Australian Open in 2013.

I’m going to side with Bouchard here, but Gavrilova is certainly capable. Bouchard has played a heap of matches on clay over the last few months with decent success. The Canadian is match-tough and has built up a nice base level of play. Gavrilova’s upset win over Yastremska in the first round was impressive, but she will face a very different challenge here, Bouchard won’t give away as many gifts. Gavrilova is very early in her comeback to the tour and is still finding her feet. The heavier hitting of Bouchard, greater aggression and match-toughness should give the Canadian the edge here.

Prediction: Eugenie Bouchard to defeat Dara Gavrilova in 3 sets

Eugenie Bouchard vs. Veronika Kudermetova, Prague R1 Preview

??⬛ Prague Open – R1 Preview + Prediction
? (wc) Eugenie Bouchard vs. ?? (8) Veronika Kudermetova

An interesting opening round clash on day 1 of the 2020 Prague Open sees the 8th seeded Veronika Kudermetova come up against Canadian wild card Eugenie Bouchard. This will be the first match for back for both since the tour restart.

On paper this should be a very one-sided contest, Kudermetova is ranked almost 300 places above Bouchard, the Russian currently sits at world number 40 whilst Bouchard’s spiralling ranking is all the way down to 332. However, I suspect Bouchard has a decent chance here with a few factors working in the Canadian’s favour.

Eugenie Bouchard of Canada during practice at the 2020 Prague Open WTA International tennis tournament

Bouchard has been busy during the official tour shutdown. Bouchard was involved in a couple of exhibition events in the USA, whilst the results weren’t quite there for Bouchard, the signs were decent. Bouchard competed well with some good players and is now working with Rennae Stubbs, a partnership that could rejuvenate the career of the former Wimbledon finalist.

Conversely, Veronika Kudermetova hasn’t played a single exhibition match during the tour shutdown.

It was Bouchard who emerged victorious in the only previous meeting between the pair, a 7/5 6/0 victory on clay in Gstaad in 2018.

I’m going for the upset here. This is an important match for Bouchard, it would be a big disappointment for her to get a wild card, travel all the way to Prague and lose in the first round. Bouchard has been practising in Prague for a few days and unlike Kudermetova, Bouchard is battled hardened heading into this match given all the exhibition events she has played over the last few months. Kudermetova has the type of attacking game that might malfunction coming off limited preparation.

Prediction: Eugenie Bouchard to defeat Veronika Kudermetova in 3 sets

Serena Williams vs. Eugenie Bouchard, Australian Open R1 Preview

Australian Open, R2 Preview
?? (16) Serena Williams vs. ?? Eugenie Bouchard

One of the most exciting second round clashes from Melbourne Park on Thursday sees Serena Williams take on Eugenie Bouchard. Williams and Bouchard are two of the biggest names in women’s tennis so there will be a lot of interest surrounding this match-up. However, Bouchard will need to produce her best tennis to make this match competitive and ensure it lives up to the hype.

Eugenie Bouchard of Canada in action during her first-round match at the 2019 Australian Open Grand Slam tennis tournament

Serena Williams made an impressive start to her Australian Open campaign. The 7-time former champion cruised through her opening round match against Germany’s Tatjana Maria, the American claimed a dominant 6-0 6-2 victory in just 50 minutes. Serena won 85% of her service points, did not face a break point and hit 22 winners to just 11 unforced errors in what was a very tidy start to the tournament.

Eugenie Bouchard also cruised through her opening round match at Melbourne Park. The former semi-finalist smashed China’s Peng Shuai 6-2 6-1 in 60 minutes to book a showdown with Williams in what will be their first meeting at a Grand Slam event. Bouchard’s numbers were impressive in her first round win, Bouchard hit 15 winners to 13 unforced errors and is seemingly starting to somewhat resemble the player that reached the final 4 at this tournament in 2014.

Williams has won both of the previous matches between the pair. Williams beat Bouchard in 3 sets in Cincinnati in 2013, their most recent match ended in a dominant 6-1 6-1 win for Williams at the WTA finals Singapore in 2014.

Can Bouchard claim her first career win over Williams in Melbourne?

Eugenie Bouchard vs. Harmony Tan, US Open R1 Preview

??? US OPEN: R1 Preview
?? (Q) Eugenie Bouchard vs. ?? (wc) Harmony Tan

Eugenie Bouchard is one of the form qualifiers to reach the main draw at Flushing Meadows. The Canadian steamrolled her way through the qualifying draw and will be a heavy favourite when she opens her main draw campaign on Tuesday against French wild card Harmony Tan. On paper this is a huge mismatch, a former Grand Slam finalist up against a Grand Slam main draw debutant.

Eugenie Bouchard of Canada in action during the first qualification round at the 2018 US Open Grand Slam tennis tournament

Eugenie Bouchard cruised through the qualifying draw in New York. All eyes were on Bouchard, waiting for another potential slip up, but the Canadian made no such mistake. Bouchard easily defeated Zhao, Gorgodze and Loeb, losing a combined 7 games throughout the 3 victories. Bouchard has a complicated relationship with the US Open given her former lengthy legal battle against the USTA dating back to an incident in 2016. Bouchard has lost at the opening round stage in New York in the last couple of years but she now has a great chance to break that trend against a very inexperienced opponent.

Harmony Tan will be competing in the main draw of the Grand Slam, the Frenchwoman won the right to compete in the draw at a French regional playoff in July where she won a wild card entry into the main draw in New York. Not only is this Tan’s first main draw appearance at a Grand Slam, it is her first appearance in the main draw at the WTA tour level. This is a huge opportunity for the Frenchwoman.

This will be the first career meeting between the pair.

Elise Mertens vs. Eugenie Bouchard, Montreal R1 Preview

?? Rogers Cup, Montreal R1 Preview
?? (14) Elise Mertens vs. ?? (wc) Eugenie Bouchard

The face of Canadian tennis will begin her Rogers Cup campaign on Tuesday, Eugenie Bouchard will face a tough test when she takes on the 14th seeded Elise Mertens. This has been a good match-up for Mertens in the past and the Belgian has been one of the most consistent players on tour in 2018, does Bouchard have it in her to step it up and o cause a big upset at home?

Elise Mertens of Belgium in action during her quarter-final match at the 2018 Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic WTA Premier tennis tournament

Elise Mertens started her North American hard court swing in style last week as she reached the semi-finals in San Jose. A noteworthy straight set win over Johanna Konta was the highlight of the week in San Jose, however the week did end in disappointment as Mertens seemed to break down physically in her semi-final loss to Mihaela Buzarnescu from a set up. It will be interesting to see where Mertens is at physically in Montreal.

Eugenie Bouchard has dropped down to the ITF level of late, playing a couple of lower level tournaments on clay after Wimbledon. Bouchard will begin her North American hard court swing in Montreal, the Rogers Cup has typically not been a successful tournament for Bouchard, she has struggled to deal with the pressure and attention she receives when playing at home.

Mertens crushed Bouchard in their only previous meeting at the tour level, a 6-2 6-0 win on grass in s-Hertogenbosch in 2016. More recently, Mertens defeated Bouchard 6-4 6-4 at the Hopman cup in January this year.

Eugenie Bouchard vs Evgeniya Rodina, U.S Open R1 Preview

US Open, ????? R1 Preview + Prediction
?? Eugenie Bouchard vs ?? Evgeniya Rodina

Eugenie Bouchard will begin her 2017 U.S Open campaign on Tuesday, second up on Grandstand Court against Russia’s Evgeniya Rodina. Bouchard is having another horrific year and has one last chance to turn her fortunes around at a major event in 2017. Bouchard’s opening round clash in New York with Rodina looms as a very pleasant draw for the Canadian. Rodina has been eliminated at the opening round stage of all three Grand Slam events this year. There is no excuse for Bouchard to lose this match.

Agnieszka Radwanska vs Eugenie Bouchard, New Haven R2 Preview

Connecticut Open, ??? New Haven preview + prediction
R2: (1) ?? Agnieszka Radwanska vs (wc) ?? Eugenie Bouchard

Agnieszka Radwanska and Eugenie Bouchard will open the night session on Tuesday at the Connecticut Open. Radwanska is the defending champion in New Haven this week and will desperately want to replicate the form that saw her win the title in 2016 as she looks to gain much needed momentum heading into the final Grand slam of the year next week. Radwanska has a perfect record over Bouchard, the Pole has won all three of their previous matches, all in straight sets. Can Bouchard turn things around here?

Carla Suarez Navarro vs Eugenie Bouchard, Wimbledon R1 Preview

Wimbledon ???? Day 1, R1 Match Preview:
(25) ?? Carla Suarez Navarro vs ?? Eugenie Bouchard

The pick of the opening round clashes as SW19 on day 1 sees Carla Suarez Navarro come up against Eugenie Bouchard. This match-up, on this surface should suite the Canadian, however Bouchard’s form has been extremely erratic in recent times whilst Suarez Navarro is one of the most consistent players on tour. Suarez Navarro holds a 2-1 head-to-head record over Bouchard and won their previous match on a grass court. This looms as a close match, it will be interesting to see which Bouchard shows up for this one.

Anastasija Sevastova vs Eugenie Bouchard, Roland Garros R2 Preview

Roland Garros, ??? R2 Preview + Prediction
(17) ?? Anastasija Sevastova vs ?? Eugenie Bouchard

2014 Roland Garros semi-finalist Eugenie Bouchard continues her 2017 Paris campaign on Thursday when she takes on the 17th seeded Anastasija Sevastova in the second round at Roland Garros. Bouchard made a slow start to her opening round match but eventually rallied to come from a set down to defeat Risa Ozaki. The Canadian can’t afford a similar slow start in her second round clash with Sevastova, the Latvian has been in great form in the lead-up to Paris and is probably playing the best tennis of her career at the moment.

Risa Ozaki vs Eugenie Bouchard, Roland Garros R1 Preview

Roland Garros, ??? R1 Preview + Prediction
?? Risa Ozaki vs ?? Eugenie Bouchard

Eugenie Bouchard will begin her 2017 Roland Garros campaign on Tuesday with a first clash against Japan’s Risa Ozaki. Bouchard has generally underachieved in 2017, however she looked to turn a corner a few weeks ago in Madrid where she won one of the matches of the year against Maria Sharapova on route to a quarter-final exit. Risa Ozaki looms as a good first round draw for Bouchard, an opponent she should be beating.
