???? US OPEN, R2 match preview ?? (2) Ashleigh Barty vs. ?? Lauren Davis
The second seeded Ash Barty continues her US Open campaign on Wednesday with a second round clash against Lauren Davis. Barty will be hoping for an improved performance after she was forced to come from a set down against Zarina Diyas in her opening round match at Flushing Meadows. Davis will have other ideas and has proven to be a player capable of causing big upsets at majors.
Ash Barty made a less than convincing start to the final major of the season. The reigning Roland Garros champion was rusty in a 1-6 6-3 6-2 win over Kazakhstan’s Zarina Diyas. Barty arrived in New York fresh from a semi-final showing in Cincinnati where she also had to battle from a set down on multiple occasions, it’s good that the Aussie is able to come through these tough situations but she would certainly like to be playing better tennis.
Lauren Davis is through to the second round at the US Open for the third time in her 7th main draw appearance at the event. Davis has never made it past the second round in New York and will need to claim a huge upset win to change that in 2019. Davis started her campaign with a 7-5 6-2 win over Swedish qualifier Johanna Larsson but will face a far stronger challenge against the second ranked Ash Barty. Davis can take confidence from her big upset win over Angelique Kerber at Wimbledon earlier this year.
Barty won the only previous match between the pair, a 2-6 6-3 7-5 win in Acapulco in 2014. That win was considered an upset win for Barty, since then Barty is one of the most improved players on tour whilst Davis has made little ground.
I expect Barty to produce an improved performance here after a bit of a scare in her opening round match. This should be a comfortable match-up for Barty, the hard courts of New York suit Barty’s game perfectly and she has the game to handle Davis. Barty has the power to punish Davis and the versatility to unsettle the American. Barty is simply far more reliable and mentally tough.
Prediction: Ashleigh Barty to defeat Lauren Davis in 2 sets
???? Roland Garros, R2 Preview ?? (26) Johanna Konta vs. ?? (wc) Lauren Davis
Johanna Konta continues her Roland Garros campaign on Thursday with a second round clash against America’s Lauren Davis. A red-hot Konta finally broke her Roland Garros duck with an opening round win against Antonia Lottner and will be a fairly strong favourite in this match-up against the American wild card. However, Davis is also in good form at the moment, can the American cause an upset?
Konta is playing the best tennis of her career on clay. The British number 1 arrived in Paris fresh from a runner-up showing in Rome, her best ever result on a clay court. Konta also reached the final in Rabat earlier this year on clay, overall Konta boasts an impressive 11-3 win/loss record on the red dirt in 2019. Konta kick-started her 2019 Roland Garros campaign with a 6-4 6-4 win over Antonia Lottner, her first ever main draw win at Roland Garros in her fifth attempt.
Lauren Davis made the most of her main draw wild card in the opening round as she easily defeated Kristyna Pliskova 6-2 6-4. Davis went through her opening round match without dropping serve but it must be said that Pliskova offered little to no resistance, Davis will face a much tougher test against an in form Konta in the next round. Davis also brings good momentum into this match having arrives in Paris fresh from winning the ITF 100K event in Bonita Springs a few weeks ago.
Konta holds a 2-1 head-to-head record over Davis, this will be their first ever meeting at the tour level.

Abierto Mexicano TELCEL, ??? Acapulco R1 Preview ?? (7) Lesia Tsurenko vs ?? Lauren Davis
Lesia Tsurenko will begin her Acapulco title defense with a tough opening round clash against America’s Lauren Davis. Tsurenko has made a mediocre start to the season and will hope to ignite her 2018 campaign in Acapulco where she played so well 12 months ago. Lauren Davis will be in action for the first time since her epic 3 set loss at the hands of Simona Halep at the Australian Open. This will be the first career meeting between the pair.
Lesia Tsurenko has a had a few good victories in 2018 but the Ukrainian has not been as consistent as she would have liked. Tsurenko arrives in Acapulco fresh off a decent week in Dubai. Tsurenko won 3 matches to advance through a tough qualifying draw in Dubai before succumbing to Sara Errani in the opening round. A vast majority of Tsurenko’s ranking points are to be defended this week, the pressure is on the 2017 Acapulco champion.
Lauren Davis showed just what she is capable of in epic third round clash at the Australian Open about a month ago, a match that ended 15-13 in the third set. Davis had match points in that match to beat the then world number 1, although she could not get over the line, it was still an impressive performance from Davis, one that should give the American confidence moving forward. Davis has not played a competitive match since the Australian Open but was in the squad for the USA’s 3-0 win over the Netherlands where she got value practise time with the Williams sisters.
It will be interesting to see how the first matchup between these two pans out.
