Magda Linette vs. Vera Zvonareva, CincyTennis R1 Preview

?? Western & Southern Open – R1 Preview
?? Magda Linette vs. ?? Vera Zvonareva

Magda Linette and Vera Zvonareva will go head-to-head for the first time when they meet at the opening round stage of the Western & Southern Open on Sunday at Flushing Meadows. There are over 200 places in the rankings separating the pair, but the odds are curiously even heading into this first round clash.

Linette made her return to the tour in Lexington a few weeks ago where she defeated Lauren Davis in straight sets in the opening round before succumbing to the eventual champion Jennifer Brady in straight sets in the second round.

Zvonareva also made her tour restart in Lexington where she was defeated by Jessica Pegula in three tight sets in the first round. So far so good for the former world number 2 in New York. The 35-year-old defeated Danka Kovinic and Astra Sharma in straight sets to ensure her progression through the qualifying draw.

I’m going to side with Linette here. The Pole is generally very underrated and has quietly been moving up the rankings playing her best tennis over the last few years. Linette is especially efficient on a hard court and almost always wins the matches she should win; this looks like a match that falls into that category. I doubt Zvonareva has the stamina to outlast Linette in a baseline struggle and I doubt Zvonareva has the consistent firepower to hit Linette off the court. Unless Linette has an off, which is rare, the Pole will win.

Prediction: Magda Linette to defeat Vera Zvonareva in 2 sets

Karolina Muchova vs. Magda Linette, Doha R1 Preview

Qatar Total Open, Doha R1 Preview + prediction:
?? Karolina Muchova vs. ?? Magda Linette

Karolina Muchova and Magda Linette will renew their rivalry when they do battle at the opening round stage of the 2020 Qatar Total Open in Doha. Muchova and Linette both claimed victories over each other during their respective runs to maiden titles in 2019. Linette defeated Muchova at the quarter-final stage in the Bronx before winning the title, Muchova avenged that loss in the Seoul final a few months later, who will edge ahead in the head-to-head series with a win in their third career meeting?

Karolina Muchova has made a very disappointing start to her 2020 campaign and arrives in Doha in desperate need of a strong run. Muchova ended 2019 as one of the form players on tour but has certainly failed to rediscover that form in the new year. Muchova has only won 1 match in 2020, most recently she was beaten by Katerina Siniakova in 3 sets in Dubai last week in the first round, Muchova failed to win a single game in the deciding set, a very deflating way to lose.

Magda Linette arrives in Doha full of confidence having just won her second career title in Hua Hin a few weeks ago. It was a fantastic week for Linette in Hua Hin where she dropped just 1 set on route to winning the title. Linette’s run in Hua Hin will be a big boost for Pole given she previously made a poor start to the year; Linette will be hoping to continue to gain momentum in Doha.

The head-to-head record between Muchova and Linette is split at 1 win apiece. Both meetings took place in 2019, It was Linette who emerged victorious in the Bronx with a 6-7 6-4 7-6 victory. Muchova then dominated Linette in the championship match in Seoul, a 6-1 6-1 win for the Czech.

I’m going to side with Linette here. It is Linette who brings far superior form and confidence into this match. On Paper this is a very even match-up, so the superior form and confidence of Linette means she is the favourite here. Muchova is really struggling to find her game at the moment and will find life tough in this match against the Pole who gives very little away. Expect Linette to be too solid on this occasion, Muchova doesn’t seem efficient enough at the moment to get past such a solid, in-form opponent.

Prediction: Magda Linette to defeat Karolina Muchova in 3 sets

Naomi Osaka vs. Magda Linette, Australian Open R1 Preview

?? Australian Open, R1 Preview
?? (4) Naomi Osaka vs. ?? Magda Linette

Naomi Osaka begins her 2019 Australian Open campaign on Tuesday night with a first round clash against Poland’s Magda Linette on Rod Laver Arena. The eyes of the tennis world are on Naomi Osaka at this year’s Australian Open in what will be the first Grand Slam Osaka has competed in since winning the US Open last year, how will the young star handle the extra attention and added pressure?

Naomi Osaka of Japan in action during the quarter-final at the 2019 Brisbane International WTA Premier tennis tournament

Naomi Osaka made a decent start to the 2019 season with a semi-final showing at the Brisbane International. Osaka started the season with a straight set win over Destanee Aiava before fighting from a set down to claim an important win over Anastasija Sevastova. The tournament ended in disappointment for Osaka when she surprisingly lost to Lesia Tsurenko in straight sets, Osaka then withdrew from Sydney, instead Osaka has been in Melbourne for a week training.

Magda Linette arrives at Melbourne Park battle hardened. Linette was in action at the Hobart International last week where she claimed a couple of wins to get through the qualifying draw before upsetting Maria Sakkari in the opening round. Linette was eliminated from Hobart in the second round, a tough 3 set loss to Greet Minnen, Linette served for the match in the third set.

Interestingly it was Linette who won the only previous match between the pair, a 6-2 3-6 6-3 win in Washington D.C last year. Osaka certainly wasn’t anywhere near her best on that occasion and will surely be a a tougher opponent on this occasion.

Karolina Pliskova vs Magda Linette, U.S Open R1 Preview

US Open, ????? R1 Preview + Prediction
(1) ?? Karolina Pliskova vs ?? Magda Linette

Karolina Pliskova will be competing at a Grand Slam event as the world number 1 for the first time at this year’s U.S Open. The 2016 runner-up in New York begins her 2017 campaign with a first round clash against Poland’s Magda Linette. The U.S Open is a special event for Pliskova given the 2016 tournament was her first major breakthrough at the Grand Slam level, since then Pliskova has been the most consistent player on tour and is one of the favourites to win the title in 2017.

Magda Linette vs Shuai Zhang, New Haven R2 Preview

Connecticut Open, ??? New Haven preview + prediction
R2: (Q) ?? Magda Linette vs ?? Shuai Zhang

Shuai Zhang caused the biggest upset of the opening round when she eliminated 3-time former champion Petra Kvitova in straight sets. Zhang claimed a surprisingly easy 6-2 6-1 win over Petra Kvitova on Monday night and will look to bring momentum from that big win into her second round clash with Magda Linette on Wednesday. In more good news for Zhang, she holds a perfect 2-0 head-to-head record over Linette heading into this second round clash at the Connecticut Open.
