Kiki Bertens vs. Pauline Parmentier, Roland Garros R1 Preview

???? Roland Garros, R1 Preview
?? (4) Kiki Bertens vs. ?? Pauline Parmentier

Kiki Bertens is one of the in form players heading into Roland Garros 2019, the newly crowned member of the top 5 begins her Paris campaign against Frenchwoman Pauline Parmentier. Bertens won the biggest tile of her career in Madrid a few weeks ago and is arguably the second favourite behind Simona Halep heading into this event, the expectations have never been higher for Bertens heading into a major.

Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands during practice at the 2019 Roland Garros Grand Slam tennis tournament

Kiki Bertens has proven herself in Paris before, a former semi-finalist, Bertens will be hoping to go one step further in 2019 to reach her first Grand Slam final. Bertens is the form player on tour on the red dirt, Bertens reached the semi-finals in Stuttgart, won Madrid and reached the semi-finals in Rome all in the last month and a bit. Clay has always been the Dutchwoman’s best surface, she is extremely tough to break down due to her very complete game on the surface.

Pauline Parmentier also enjoys a relatively good record in Paris. Parmentier’s home slam has always been her most successful and she has enjoyed some rare success at this level in recent years with a couple of third round appearances. However, Parmentier’s recent form is not flash, she has lost 5 of her 6 matches in the lead-up to Paris on clay. The good news for Parmentier is her strong record against Bertens.

Parmentier has surprisingly won all 3 of the previous matches between the pair. The most recent match between the two took place in Monterrey back in 2016, Parmentier won that match in 3 sets. Bertens has made gigantic improvements since their last match and this will be their first career meeting on clay.

Madison Keys vs. Pauline Parmentier, US Open R1 Preview

??? US OPEN: R1 Preview
?? (14) Madison Keys vs. ?? Pauline Parmentier

Madison Keys begins her 2018 US Open campaign with what looks like a favourable match-up against Pauline Parmentier. Keys was a runner-up in New York last year, it was an outstanding few weeks for Keys but it all ended in disappointment when she was thrashed in the final, overwhelmed in her first Grand Slam final against Sloane Stephens. It will be interesting to see how Keys responds in her return to New York.

Madison Keys of the United States in action during her quarter-final match at the 2018 Western & Southern Open WTA Premier 5 tennis tournament

Keys played just 1 event in the lead-up to this year’s U.S Open, much less than her usual schedule. Keys reached the quarter-finals in Cincinnati where she claimed a notable victory against Angelique Kerber from a set and a break down before losing to Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets. Keys has reached the later stages of a Grand Slam on several occasions now, most recently a semi-final showing at Roland Garros earlier this year, the task for Keys is to push on and win a major.

Parmentier also played just 1 event in the lead-up to the final Grand Slam of the year. Parmentier fell at the last hurdle in qualifying in New Haven last week, she received a lucky loser spot in the main draw where she was beaten by Anett Kontaveit in the first round in 3 sets.

The only previous match between the pair took place on clay in Fed Cup tie earlier this year, Keys won in 2 tight sets. This is a match-up that features a real contrast in styles, can the experienced Frenchwoman cause problems for Keys?

Caroline Wozniacki vs. Pauline Parmentier, Roland Garros R3 Preview

?? Roland Garros, R3 Preview
?? (2) Caroline Wozniacki vs. ?? Pauline Parmentier

Caroline Wozniacki and Pauline Parmentier will renew hostilities when they meet at the third round stage at Roland Garros on Friday. Wozniacki has once again benefited from a very favourable draw and has cruised through her first few matches in Paris, conversely Parmentier has battled from a set down against fellow Frenchwomen to reach the third round at her home slam for the third time. Can the Frenchwoman cause a big upset in front of the vocal Parisian crowd?

Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark in action during her second-round match at the 2018 Roland Garros Grand Slam tennis tournament

Roland Garros has historically been Wozniacki’s least successful slam, the Dane has reached the second week in Paris on just 2 previous occasions but will be a strong favourite to make that three times when she takes on Parmentier. Wozniacki has been typically solid in her first few matches in Paris, beating Danielle Collins 7-6 6-1 and Georgina Garcia Perez 6-0 6-1. Wozniacki has certainly fallen into a favourable section in the draw and she rarely slips up in these circumstances.

Pauline Parmentier is in great form at the moment. It was a few months ago where Parmentier claimed her first title in almost 10 years as she won the Istanbul Cup. Parmentier is now into the third round Paris for the third time after back-to-back 3 set wins. The 32-year-old started the week with a 3-6 7-6 6-2 win over Chloe Paquet followed by a courageous 6-7 6-4 6-2 win over Alize Cornet. Parmentier will enter her third round match with Wozniacki having nothing to lose but a lot to gain, a potentially dangerous combination.

Wozniacki won all 3 of the completed matches between the pair, most recently Parmentier did push the Dane to 3 sets in Bastad last year. The pair did play in Istanbul earlier this year where the scores were level at a set apiece before Wozniacki retired injured.

Sloane Stephens vs Pauline Parmentier, Acapulco R1 Preview

Abierto Mexicano TELCEL, ??? Acapulco R1 Preview
?? (1) Sloane Stephens vs ?? Pauline Parmentier

2016 Abierto Mexicano champion Sloane Stephens begins her 2018 Acapulco campaign against Pauline Parmentier. Incredibly, Stephens has not won a match since her U.S Open triumph almost 6 months ago. This opening round clash in Acapulco is seemingly a great opportunity for Stephens to end her 6-match losing streak since becoming a Grand Slam champion, will she make the most of this opportunity?

Stephens has not played since her opening round defeat at the Australian Open over a month ago, it will be interesting to see what type of level the American can bring to Acapulco. Stephens will be competing at the event for the first time since her triumph at the event in 2016, where she beat Dominika Cibulkova in an epic final. Perhaps a return to Acapulco will allow Stephens to rediscover some confidence and better form.

Pauline Parmentier has also struggled in 2018. The Frenchwoman has a poor 1-5 win/loss record. Parmentier was in action last week in Budapest where she was beaten in the opening round by Sabine Lisicki in straight sets.

The head-to-head record between these two is split at 1 win apiece. Stephens won the only previous match between the pair on a hard court, a 3 set win in Miami in 2012 whilst more recently, Parmentier beat Stephens in 3 sets on clay in Strasbourg.
