Sloane Stephens vs. Sara Sorribes Tormo, Roland Garros R2 Preview

🇫🇷🥖💶 Roland Garros, R2 Preview
🇺🇸 (7) Sloane Stephens vs. 🇪🇸 Sara Sorribes Tormo

Sloane Stephens continues her 2019 Roland Garros campaign on Wednesday with a potentially tricky clash against Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo. Paris has been Sloane’s most consistent Grand Slam over her career, the American will be hoping to go one step better than her runner-up appearance last year as she takes aim at capturing a second major title.

Sloane Stephens was made to work surprisingly hard to come through her opening round match in Paris against Misaki Doi. Stephens overcame a second set slump to claim a 6-3 7-6 win over Doi in an hour and 33 minutes. Sloane’s form leading into this event has been typically erratic but one thing Sloane has generally managed to do throughout her career is peak at the majors which makes her one of the contenders this year at Roland Garros, especially given her strength on the red dirt.

Sara Sorribes Tormo advanced to the second round in Paris for the first time thanks to a 6-1 5-7 6-2 win over Alison Van Uytvanck. Sorribes Tormo’s win over Van Uytvanck was a big one, just her second main draw win at a Grand Slam and it was not against a pushover, Van Uytvanck is a former quarter-finalist in Paris. Sorribes Tormo is a gutsy competitor and will relish the opportunity of playing Stephens in Paris, a familiar foe.

Stephens and Sorribes Tormo know what to expect from each other heading into this clash. The pair went head-to-head in an epic scrap earlier this year on the green clay of Charleston, Stephens won 7-6 7-6 in a match that lasted over 2 and a half hours. Stephens will be hoping to make lighter work of the Spaniard on this occasion, can she do it?

Carla Suarez Navarro vs. Sara Sorribes Tormo, Wimbledon R2 Preview

🇬🇧 Wimbledon, R2 Preview
🇪🇸 (27) Carla Suarez Navarro vs. 🇪🇸 Sara Sorribes Tormo

An all-Spanish battle sees the 27th seeded Carla Suarez Navarro take on Sara Sorribes Tormo. Grass is the least preferred surface of both Suarez Navarro and Sorribes Tormo, both will therefore see this match-up as a good opportunity to reach the third round stage at SW19. It is Suarez Navarro who has dominated this match-up in the past and heads into this match as a strong favourite.

Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain in action during her first-round match at the 2018 Wimbledon Championships Grand Slam tournament

Suarez Navarro got her Wimbledon campaign off to a great start as she claimed a comfortable 6-2 6-4 victory over Carina Witthoeft on Tuesday. The Spaniard’s opening round encounter with Witthoeft loomed as a real dangerous match for the 27th seed, it was therefore impressive that she was able to come through the match so comfortably. Wimbledon has been Carla’s least successful Grand Slam event but she has still managed to reach the fourth round stage on two previous occasions.

Sara Sorribes Tormo is already having a great event. Sorribes Tormo made her way through the qualifying draw at Roehampton, beating Badosa Gibert, Bouzkova and Kostyuk on route to the main draw. The 21-year-old claimed her first ever main draw victory at Wimbledon with a 7-6 6-1 triumph over Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi, a significant win for Sorribes Tormo in what should have been a troublesome match-up on this surface.

Suarez Navarro holds a perfect 2-0 head-to-head record over Sorribes Tormo. Suarez Navarro easily won their 2 previous matches, 6-4 6-1 in Linz in 2016 and 6-2 6-0 in Monterrey in 2017. Sorribes Tormo is full of confidence having won 4 matches in a row on grass, perhaps she can make this a much more competitive match?
