??☀️ Palermo Ladies Open – R1 Preview + Prediction ?? (7) Dayana Yastremska vs. ?? Sara Sorribes Tormo
A huge contrast in styles will be on show as the 7th seeded Dayana Yastremska takes on an in-form Sara Sorribes Tormo at the opening round stage of the 31st Palermo Ladies Open.
This will be the first career meeting between the pair, the huge hitting and aggressive game of Yastremska up against the consistency and determination of Sorribes Tormo.
The pair enter this clash with contrasting preparations. Yastremska was not involved in any exhibition events during the tour shutdown but did look like a player that would do plenty of damage this year in the early stages of the season. Conversely, Sorribes Tormo played a couple of exhibition events in Spain last month where she went on an 8-match winning streak to win both events, albeit against relatively weak opposition.
I will side with Yastremska here despite her limited preparation. There is no doubt that Yastremska has the game to absolutely dominate this match-up. The match probably will not turn out to be a straightforward one for a potentially rusty Yastremska, but she should eventually find the level required to hit through the Spaniard.
Prediction: Dayana Yastremska to defeat Sara Sorribes Tormo in 3 sets
???? Roland Garros, R2 Preview
?? (7) Sloane Stephens vs. ?? Sara Sorribes Tormo
Sloane Stephens continues her 2019 Roland Garros campaign on Wednesday with a potentially tricky clash against Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo. Paris has been Sloane’s most consistent Grand Slam over her career, the American will be hoping to go one step better than her runner-up appearance last year as she takes aim at capturing a second major title.
Sloane Stephens was made to work surprisingly hard to come through her opening round match in Paris against Misaki Doi. Stephens overcame a second set slump to claim a 6-3 7-6 win over Doi in an hour and 33 minutes. Sloane’s form leading into this event has been typically erratic but one thing Sloane has generally managed to do throughout her career is peak at the majors which makes her one of the contenders this year at Roland Garros, especially given her strength on the red dirt.
Sara Sorribes Tormo advanced to the second round in Paris for the first time thanks to a 6-1 5-7 6-2 win over Alison Van Uytvanck. Sorribes Tormo’s win over Van Uytvanck was a big one, just her second main draw win at a Grand Slam and it was not against a pushover, Van Uytvanck is a former quarter-finalist in Paris. Sorribes Tormo is a gutsy competitor and will relish the opportunity of playing Stephens in Paris, a familiar foe.
Stephens and Sorribes Tormo know what to expect from each other heading into this clash. The pair went head-to-head in an epic scrap earlier this year on the green clay of Charleston, Stephens won 7-6 7-6 in a match that lasted over 2 and a half hours. Stephens will be hoping to make lighter work of the Spaniard on this occasion, can she do it?

Kiki Bertens will be aiming to reach back-to-back finals in Gstaad when she comes up against Sara Sorribes Tormo in the first semi-final of the day on Saturday. Bertens has an extremely impressive 46-11 win/loss record on clay over the last two seasons and looms as the favourite to win the title in Gstaad entering the semi-final stage of the event. Ladies Championship, Gstaad, ???️ Quarter-final Preview ?? Sara Sorribes Tormo vs ?? Tamara Korpatsch
A big opportunity presents itself to Sara Sorribes Tormo and Tamara Korpatsch when they go head-to-head for a semi-final spot in Gstaad on Friday. Both Sorribes Tormo and Korpatsch are comfortable on a clay court and are both on the rise up the rankings. A semi-final showing in Gstaad would be a huge ranking boost for both, with so much on the line it will be interesting too see which of these two will step up and emerge victorious.
Roland Garros, ??? R1 Preview + Prediction (30) ?? Timea Bacsinszky vs ?? Sara Sorribes Tormo
Timea Bacsinszky has enjoyed Roland Garros in recent times, Timea made her big breakthrough at the event in 2015 when she reached the semi-finals and backed up that performance last year as she managed to reach the quarter-finals. Timea has not been at her best in 2017 but will be hoping that a return to Paris will see a return to form. Bacsinszky will start a strong favourite to come through her opening round match as she comes up against inexperienced Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo.
