Christina McHale vs Monica Puig, Acapulco QF Preview

Abierto Mexicano TELCEL, ??? Acapulco QF Preview
(5) ?? Christina McHale vs (4) ?? Monica Puig

Christina McHale and Monica Puig will surprisingly go head-to-head for the very first time at the WTA tour level when they face off at the quarter-final stage of the Abierto Mexicano TELCEL in Acapulco on Friday. This promises to be an intriguing match-up between two very competent baseliners. Both McHale and Puig are starting to build some strong positive moment over the last couple of weeks, this is big match both ladies, both big title contenders this week in Acapulco if they can get through this match.

Christina McHale is into her first quarter-final since Osaka in 2016 where she won her very first WTA title. The American has progressed to the final 8 without dropping a set, claiming comfortable victories over Fiona Ferro (6-4 6-4) and Taylor Townsend (6-1 7-6).

Monica Puig has also advanced to the quarter-final without dropping a set. Puig was in control of both matches from very early before surviving a late wobble on each occasion. The Olympic champion secured a 6-4 7-6 win over Francesca Schiavone and a 6-4 6-4 win over Daniela Hantuchova. Puig seems very focused and determined this week and has built up some confidence after a good showing in the middle east where she made the semi-finals in Doha and a won a few matches in Dubai.

It will be interesting to see how these two match-up against each other. Puig has more firepower from the ground and behind her serve but McHale is more steady and secure throughout matches. This can easily go either way and will come down to who can execute their game better on the day. I’d side with Puig here, Monica is playing with a lot of confidence at the moment and that is the key to success for her, if she is patient and makes the right decisions she should be too strong for McHale.

Prediction: Monica Puig to defeat Christina McHale in 3 sets
