CoCo Vandeweghe vs Lucie Safarova, U.S Open R4 Preview

US Open, ????? R4 Preview + Prediction:
(20) ?? CoCo Vandeweghe vs ?? Lucie Safarova

CoCo Vandeweghe overcame a very negative h2h record to advance to the fourth round with a tough three set win over Agnieszka Radwanska. Vandeweghe will need to overcome another negative h2h record if she is to advance to the quarter-final stage in New York. Vandeweghe’s fourth round opponent on Monday will be Lucie Safarova, the Czech holds a 3-1 h2h record over Vandeweghe and has won their 3 most recent matches, including a three set win at Indian Wells earlier this year. This is a huge match for both ladies and we should see a tight contest with minimal break of serves. Who will step up and take this opportunity to reach the quarter-finals in New York.

CoCo Vandeweghe and Lucie Safarova have both endured tough passages to the second week at Flushing Meadows. Vandeweghe started her campaign with a come from behind, three set win over Alison Riske before defeating Ons Jabeur in two tough sets. Vandeweghe secured her spot in the fourth round with one of her best wins of the year, a 7-5 4-6 6-4 win over Agnieszka Radwanska. Vandeweghe did well to close out the match against a player that has traditionally been very troublesome for the American, it will be a very confidence boosting win for Vandeweghe.

Lucie Safarova also had to come from a set down in her opening match, eventually overcoming a tough challenge from Anett Kontaveit. Safarova then won a topsy-turvy three set match against Nao Hibino before confirming her spot in the second week with a comfortable 6-3 6-2 win over Kurumi Nara in her most consistent performance of the tournament thus far.

I’m going to side with Safarova here. This has been a good match-up for Safarova and it is easy to see why. Vandeweghe has a big serve and ability to roll through service games but Safarova has traditionally held her own serve quite easily in this match-up, her favourite leftie serve swings into the weaker backhand side of Vandeweghe. Safarova also generally has the better of Vandeweghe from the baseline, so CoCo needs to serve at her best to win this match. Safarova’s game has clearly frustrated Vandeweghe which was very evident in their most recent match earlier this year at Indian Wells. Safarova is the more stable player, and is generally much steadier under pressure. In a match-up that is always going to close, Safarova is more likely to pull through a tight match.
