Wimbledon R4: Coco Vandeweghe vs (6) Lucie Safarova
An intriguing Magic Monday matchup sees Coco Vandeweghe take on Lucie Safarova for a place in the quarter-finals at SW19. Both ladies will enter this one with a heap of confidence and momentum.
Coco Vandeweghe has stormed into the second week at a Grand Slam for the first time in her career. The big serving American has finally been able to put her game together on the big stage, recording back to back upset victories over seeded opponents.
In the second round, Vandeweghe blasted 15 aces past Karolina Pliskova on route to a 7-6 6-4 victory over the eleventh seed. Vandeweghe backed up her upset win over Pliskova by embarrassing Sam Stosur in the third round.
The American won 12 games in a row to record a 6-2 6-0 victory over the Australian number 1, her third consecutive victory over Stosur. The American clearly has the formula to trouble Stosur, big serving, heavy and flat groundstrokes.
Fresh off a stunning run at Roland Garros where she reached her first Grand Slam final, Lucie Safarova has continued on her merry way this week at SW19. The world number 6 hasn’t been at her best but has found a way to win, something the Czech has struggled to do in the past.
Safarova has admitted that she can sometimes struggle during the transition from clay to grass, she has done well reach the second week despite clearly not being at her best. Lucie now has a couple of days off to prepare for a big second week in London, she can still go up another couple of gears.
Safarova has survived two early round scares in London. The sixth seed came from a set and a break down to defeat Alison Riske in the opening round before again coming from a set down to record a 3-6 6-3 6-1 victory over Sloane Stephens in the third round.
This will be the first career meeting between Lucie and Coco. Both ladies possess big games: big serves and big groundstrokes. Both are capable of playing great tennis, a tight match is to be expected. Breaks of serve will be at a premium in this one, it will come down to a couple of points to decide the winner.
Safarova should have the edge in this one. The Czech has a lot of experience on the big stage, especially compared to Vandeweghe. This is the biggest match of Coco’s career, her first fourth round match at a Grand Slam.
Safarova is also a little more consistent than Coco, from the baseline and from the serviceline. Expect Safarova to come through in a tight one.
Prediction: Lucie Safarova to defeat Coco Vandeweghe in 3 sets
