CoCo Vandeweghe vs Magdalena Rybarikova, Wimbledon QF Preview

Wimbledon?????? Quarter-Final Match Preview:
QF #2: (24) ?? CoCo Vandeweghe vs ?? Magdalena Rybarikova

CoCo Vandeweghe’s chances of winning the title at SW19 are looking greater and greater. The American’s game is perfectly suited to grass and her game is starting to click when it matters most. Vandeweghe has not dropped a set on route to her second quarter-final showing at a Grand Slam in 2017 and is fresh off an impressive win over Caroline Wozniacki. Vandeweghe’s quarter-final opponent on Tuesday is Magdalena Rybarikova. The Slovakian will be competing in her first Grand Slam quarter-final, having never previously made it past the third round of a major. This match looms as a huge opportunity for both.

CoCo Vandeweghe loomed as a dark horse heading into the event, now she is now a genuine contender. Vandeweghe rocketed through the first week at SW19 with straight set wins over Mona Barthel, Tatjana Maria and Alison Riske. Vandeweghe’s greatest test came at the fourth round stage where she came up against the fifth seeded Caroline Wozniacki. Vandeweghe produced a surprisingly mature performance to claim a 7-6 6-4 win over the Dane and advance to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon for the second time in her young career.

Magdalena Rybarikova is in the best form of her career. The Slovakian is the only unseeded player left in the draw but she is not to be taken lightly. Rybarikova has won 27 of her last 29 matches and has a 17-1 win/loss record during the grass court season (won ITF 100k titles in Surbiton and Ilkley). Rybarikova started the event with a straight set win over Monica Niculescu before eliminating the third seeded Karolina Pliskova courtesy of a 3-6 7-5 6-2 win. Rybarikova secured her spot in the second week of a Slam for the first time with a 6-2 6-1 drubbing of Lesia Tsurenko before advancing to the quarter-finals with a 6-4 2-6 6-3 win over Petra Martic.

Interestingly, it is Rybarikova who has won the only two previous matches between the pair, both comfortable straight set wins. The only previous match on a grass court ended in a 6-2 6-1 win over Rybarikova in Birmingham whilst just recently the Slovakian stunned Vandeweghe in the first round at Roland Garros earlier this year, winning 6-4 6-6-1.

Despite the head-to-head record and Rybarikova’s great form, Vandeweghe should have the advantage here. The American is in great form and full of confidence right now and should simply be too hot for Rybarikova to handle. This match-up will feature an interesting contrast in styles, the all-out power of Vandeweghe against the court craft of Rybarikova, power usually prevails. If Vandeweghe keeps her cool and remains focused she will be too strong for the Slovakian.
