CoCo Vandeweghe vs Mona Barthel, Wimbledon R1 Preview

Wimbledon ???? Day 2, R1 Match Preview:
(24) ?? CoCo Vandeweghe vs ?? Mona Barthel

In an open draw, CoCo Vandeweghe looms as a dark horse at Wimbledon 2017. Vandeweghe has proven that grass is her most dangerous surface given her huge serve, flat groundstrokes and willingness to come to the net. Vandeweghe has also shown that she is capable at the Grand Slam level after making it all the way to the semi-finals at Melbourne Park earlier this year. Vandeweghe opens her 2017 Wimbledon on Tuesday against German Mona Barthel.

Vandeweghe’s preparations for Wimbledon were not ideal but the American did show what she is capable of on the surface. Vandeweghe suffered a close three set loss in the opening round in s-hertogenbosch to Carina Witthoeft before reaching the quarter-finals in Birmingham. Vandeweghe was unfortunately forced to retire early in the third set in her quarter-final in Birmingham after a nasty fall. Earlier in the week Vandeweghe smashed Johanna Konta 6-1 6-3, a reminder that her best on this surface is arguably as good as anyone.

Tuesday’s first round clash will be the first career meeting between Vandeweghe and Barthel. The clear edge has to be given to Vandeweghe, The American should have far too much firepower and flare for Barthel on this surface. One never quite knows what to expect from Vandeweghe but in her first Grand Slam under the guidance on Pat Cash, I expect the American will cause some real damage, starting with a routine win here.

Prediction: CoCo Vandeweghe to defeat Mona Barthel in 2 sets
