Daria Gavrilova vs Petra Martic, Wimbledon R1 Preview

Wimbledon ???? Day 2, R1 Match Preview:
(20) ?? Daria Gavrilova vs (Q) ?? Petra Martic

With Sam Stosur not in action at SW19, Daria Gavrilova will be the only seeded Australian in the main draw. Gavrilova will begin her 2017 Wimbledon campaign with what looks like a favourable draw, Gavrilova will come up against Croatian qualifier Petra Martic on Tuesday. Grass has always been Gavrilova’s least preferred surface, whilst Petra Martic will be sharp having come through the qualifying draw, this looms as a potential upset.

Daria Gavrilova played a few matches in the lead-up to Wimbledon, the Aussie made it to the quarter-finals in Birmingham where she succumbed to Lucie Safarova in an epic that ended in a final set tiebreaker. Gavrilova went on to suffer a disappointing first round exit to Lara Arruabarrena in Eastbourne.

Petra Martic turned back the clock to progress through the qualifying draw and advance to the main draw at Wimbledon for the first time since 2014. Martic rolled through her first few matches before notably claiming a 3-6 7-6 7-5 win over Aleksandra Krunic to secure her spot in the main draw.

This will be the first career meeting between Gavrilova and Martic. This looks like a bit of banana skin match for Gavrilova given Martic is likely to be sharp heading into this one after her run through the qualifying draw. Martic has a big game and will take great confidence out of her run to the 4th round at Roland Garros earlier this year. Nevertheless, I’d give Gavrilova the slight edge to eventually ware down her opponent and scrape through with the win.

Prediction: Daria Gavrilova to defeat Petra Martic in 3 sets
