Daria Gavrilova vs Timea Bacsinszky, Australian Open R3 Preview

Australian Open, ?? Third Round Match preview
(22) ?? Daria Gavrilova vs (12) ?? Timea Bacsinszky

Daria Gavrilova is the last remaining Australian in the draw at her home Grand Slam. The crowd favourite will face her toughest challenge of the tournament thus far on Saturday when she comes up against the 12th seeded Timea Bacsinszky. Gavrilova has scrapped her way through to the third round, drawing a couple of big hitters into errors, the Aussie will have to overcome a very different challenge when she takes on the tactically clever Timea Bacsinszky for a spot in the second week at Melbourne Park.

Daria Gavrilova seems to thrive on the atmosphere created at her home Slam when she is in action. The Aussie has come through a couple of tough matches to advance to the third round at Melbourne Park for the second year in a row. Gavrilova started her campaign with a gritty 3-6 6-4 7-5 win over Naomi Broady before out-lasting Ana Konjuh to claim a 6-2 1-6 6-4 victory. Gavrilova did well to keep Konjuh on the move in the important moments and fixed up her shots to throw Konjuh off balance.

Timea Bacsinszky has also had to scrap her way through her first couple of matches at the Australian Open. Bacsinszky dodged a bullet in her opening round match, just sneaking past Camila Giorgi to record a 6-4 3-6 7-5 win. Giorgi came at Bacsinszky with everything she had in the final set, Bacsinszky did incredibly well to weather the storm and come out victorious. The Swiss 12th seed came through another tough battle in the second round, overcoming a late challenge by Danka Kovinic to claim a 6-1 7-6 win.

Interestingly, Gavrilova has won both of the previous matches between the pair. Gavrilova won a tight two set match on the clay of Rome in 2015 and their most recent match ended with a 4-6 6-0 6-4 win for the Aussie in Beijing last year.

I have a feeling Bacsinszky will avenge those losses on Saturday. I don’t believe Gavrilova is playing particularly well at the moment, her serve looks very shaky, as does her forehand. I think Bacsinszky will be well equipped heading into this match after their previous matches and will be smart enough to expose the weaknesses in Gavrilova’s game. I think the occasion may also get Gavrilova as it did in her fourth round match with Suarez Navarro in Melbourne last year. Timea’s experience will shine through.

Prediction: Timea Bacsinszky to defeat Daria Gavrilova in 3 sets
