Daria Kasatkina vs Johanna Konta, Sydney QF Preview

Apia International, Sydney Quarter-Final #1
Daria Kasatkina vs (6) Johanna Konta

Daria Kasatkina and Johanna Konta will meet for the first occasion on Wednesday when they meet at the quarter-final stage of the Apia International in Sydney. Kasatkina and Konta both rocketed up the rankings in 2017 and will both enter this clash full of confidence after meaningful straight set victories on Tuesday.

Daria Kasatkina enters this quarterfinal match on the back of the biggest win of her career, the young Russian disposed of the world’s top player Angelique Kerber 7-6 6-2. Kasatkina was ahead for the entire match against the world number 1 but had trouble putting the lacklustre German away. Kasatkina squandered several leads in the first set but was more controlled in the second set as she took full advantage of Kerber’s low level. Kasatkina has also had a win over Timea Babos this week, a three set win.

Johanna Konta produced her best performance of the season thus far to reach the quarter-final stage in Sydney. The British number 1 thrashed Daria Gavrilova 6-1 6-3, completing the match without her serve being broken. Konta served exceptionally well whenever she came under pressure and clinically disposed of Gavrilova’s weak second serve. Konta will be well poised with a similar display against Kasatkina, the Russian has similar weaknesses that Konta will look to expose.

This will be the first career meeting between Konta and Kasatkina. I suspect this will be a good match-up for Konta, just like her match with Gavrilova. Konta is extremely tough to break, her service numbers are up there with the best. The courts in Sydney favour big servers, therefore Kasatkina will be struggling to keep up with Konta given the Russian’s weak second serve which will be punished by Konta. Also, Kasatkina may struggle after such a big win over Kerber (despite the fact she didn’t even play all that well).

Prediction: Johanna Konta to defeat Daria Kasatkina in 2 sets
