The final match before all attention turns to the U.S Open promises to be an exciting one on Saturday as the second seeded Dominika Cibulkova comes up against Daria Gavrilova in the final of the Connecticut Open. Cibulkova and Gavrilova both claimed super-impressive semi-final victories on Friday evening and head into Saturday’s final full of confidence. Cibulkova will be aiming for her first title of the year whilst Daria Gavrilova will be fighting for her first ever WTA title. Cibulkova comfortably defeated Gavrilova in straight sets at Wimbledon last year in their only previous match, the New Haven final promises to be a much closer encounter between two feisty competitors.

Dominika Cibulkova is playing some of her best tennis of 2017 in New Haven this week. The tournament got off to a shaky start for the second seed, Cibulkova was forced to come from a set down to defeat Alize Cornet in the second round before producing improved performances to defeat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Elise Mertens in straight sets. Cibulkova secured her spot in her first final of the year with a commanding 6-1 6-3 win over Elise Mertens in what was a near-flawless match for Cibulkova.

Daria Gavrilova will have another chance to win her first WTA title on Saturday. Gavrilova is the highest ranked player on tour that has not won a title and will be desperate to reverse that stat. Gavrilova has had a great tournament, starting with a tricky three set win over Kristyna Pliskova. Gavrilova produced improved performance to defeat Timea Babos and Kristen Flipkens in straight sets before saving her best performance for her semi-final in over Agnieszka Radwanska. Gavrilova eliminated the top seed and defending champion with a 6-4 6-4 victory. Gavrilova’s win over Radwanska was one of the best wins of her career, her ability to stay composed at the end of each set was impressive.

It was Cibulkova who won the only previous match between the pair. Cibulkova claimed a 6-3 6-2 win at Wimbledon last year. This should be a very entertaining clash on Saturday, given how well both players have performances this week in New Haven, particularly at the semi-final stage.

I’m going to give the edge to Cibulkova here. There are a lot of similarities between these two, both have big forehands and great movement, two of the smallest players at the top of the game. I’d say that Cibulkova is better, more mature version of Gavrilova, Cibulkova has slightly more off both sides but more importantly she is the more stable player mentally and is likely to be stronger under pressure whilst Gavrilova’s nerves can often get the better of her, especially in important moments. Cibulkova should be too strong here.

Prediction: Dominika Cibulkova to defeat Daria Gavrilova in 3 sets

  1. Gavri’s raw passion and ability to inspire herself to great heights in rallies is a factor that can topple Cibulkova. But can she sustain this? I’m beginning to love this player as she is such an inspiring entertainer. She has put a wow factor into many of her matches recently, as in, ‘Did she DO that?’ I even find her shrieks entertaining.

Domi doesn’t know when she’s beaten. Also, Domi’s sometime errors just don’t seem to put her off her stride. I think she will just keep coming at Gavriliva until Gavrilova fizzles out (with added shriekiness).

    • Yea, Gavrilova is very entertaining to watch.. I’m not sure those characteristics will be a big factor against Cibulkova as Cibulkova is just as competitive

I agree that Cibulkova will eventually outlast her
