Dominika Cibulkova vs Kirsten Flipkens, Miami R3 Preview

Miami Open, ???? R3 Match Preview
(4) ?? Dominika Cibulkova vs ?? Kirsten Flipkens

Kirsten Flipkens has shown some vintage fighting form in Miami, coming through two extremely tough matches to set up a third round clash with the fourth seeded Dominika Cibulkova on Saturday. Cibulkova enjoys the conditions in Miami, the Slovakian raced through her opening round match in Miami and will be confident heading into this third round match having won the last two matches against Flipkens.

Dominika Cibulkova’s recent results have been okay, but Dominika has been unable to reach the heights that saw her climb into the top 5 for the first time at the end of the 2016 season. Cibulkova couldn’t produce her best tennis last week at the BNP Paribas Open but she managed to win a couple of tough matches before succumbing to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the round of 16. Cibulkova was again unable to find her best form in her opening match in Miami on Thursday, but she didn’t need it as she fought past Veronica Cepede-Royg 6-3 6-2.

Kirsten Flipkens has battled through two extremely tough matches to advance to the third round in Miami. Flipkens started the event with a 3-6 6-3 7-5 win over Jennifer Brady, Flipkens saved match point in the third set and was down by a break in both the second and third sets. In the second round, it was the Belgium who almost gave up a big lead, Flipkens led Ana Konjuh by a set and a break but was forced into a decider. Flipkens recovered well from the disappointment of the second set to win 7-6 6-7 6-2.

Cibulkova holds a 3-2 head-to-head record over Flipkens. Cibulkova has won the won the last two meetings between the pair, including a 3-6 6-3 6-1 win in the opening round of the 2015 Australian Open in what was their most recent encounter. I suspect Cibulkova will once again get the better of Flipkens here, in theory this should be a good match-up for Cibulkova, particularly on a slow surface such as the one in Miami. Cibulkova has too many weapons for Flipkens whilst the Slovakian’s defensive skills will make it hard for Flipkens to hit through her, especially on this court.

Prediction: Dominika Cibulkova to defeat Kirsten Flipkens in 2 sets
