Brisbane R2: Dominika Cibulkova vs (8) Roberta Vinci
A fascinating second round encounter sees Dominika Cibulkova come up against the eighth seeded Roberta Vinci. These two have a long, competitive history with Vinci currently leading the head-to-head series 5 games to 3. This promises to be close match between two fierce competitors with a spot in the quarter-finals up for grabs at the Brisbane International.
Dominika Cibulkova advanced into the second round with a typically gutsy 3-6 6-4 6-4 victory over Yanina Wickmayer. Dominika was on the back foot in the first set, Wickmayer was playing very damaging tennis from the baseline. The Slovakian eventually raised her game and corrected a wayward serve in the second and third sets to clinch a valuable victory. Dominika was particularly impressive under pressure, in the eight game of the final set where she held from 0-40 and avoided giving Wickmayer a chance to serve for the match.
Roberta Vinci also recorded a hard-fought first round victory at the Brisbane International, a 3-6 6-2 6-4 victory over Jelena Jankovic. Just like Dominika was outplayed in the first set by Wickmayer, Jelena was similarly dominant over the Italian. However Roberta waited for her opportunity and she started to take advantage of a dip in Jankovic’s level of play. The conditions in Brisbane help Vinci, making her slice even more difficult to deal with.
Roberta Vinci holds a 5-3 head-to-head record over Dominika, however it was the Slovakian who emerged victorious in their most recent encounter with a 6-3 7-6 win at the Rogers Cup back in 2013. This is a really tough match to call, I’m going to side with Dominika. The Slovakian really impressed me in her opening round victory, striking the ball extremely well from the baseline, she should have enough firepower to get the job done.
