Cincinnati R2: (14) Elina Svitolina vs Eugenie Bouchard
An intriguing second round clash at the Western & Southern Open sees Elina Svitolina come up against Eugenie Bouchard on Wednesday evening. Eugenie Bouchard will be desperate to pick up back-to-back victories for the first time since Indian Wells as time runs out for the Canadian to gain some much needed confidence ahead of the last Grand Slam of the year in New York.
Elina Svitolina has been extremely consistent in 2015 and has made a solid start to her U.S Open series campaign. The Ukrainian reached the semi-finals in Stanford before receiving a tough draw in Toronto, crashing out to Victoria Azarenka in the first round. Elina advanced to the second round in Cincinnati with a 6-2 4-6 6-0 victory over Alison Riske on Monday night. Elina was extremely disappointed to not close out the match in 2 sets, but she regrouped well to run away with the match in the third set.
Eugenie Bouchard picked up just her third victory since Indian Wells on Tuesday evening, a 7-6 7-6 win over Kateryna Bondarenko. Bouchard was far from convincing, double faults and wayward groundstrokes continue to haunt the Canadian. Nevertheless it must have been a relief for Genie to pick up a victory, no matter how she played. Bouchard needs to beat someone decent to lift her confidence, this is a perfect opportunity.
Genie will be looking for her first ever victory over Elina. The Ukrainian holds a 2-0 head to head record over Genie. In Miami last year Svitolina defeated Bouchard 1-6 6-1 6-2 in their most recent encounter. It’s going to be tough for the Canadian to turn things around here, Svitolina is not a good opponent to play when you’re out of form because she will not give many free points away and she will not defeat herself. Elina should be too solid for Genie in this one.
