Elina Svitolina vs Mona Barthel, Rome R3 Preview

Internazionali BNL d’Italia ?? R3 Preview
(8) ?? Elina Svitolina vs (Q) ?? Mona Barthel

Mona Barthel enters her third round clash with Elina Svitolina in Rome on a 12-match winning streak. The German came through the qualifying draw to win the title in Prague a couple of weeks ago and has again successfully advanced through the qualifying draw in Rome. Barthel will face her biggest challenge of the last couple of weeks when she faces a determined Elina Svitolina for a place in the quarter-finals at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia.

Elina Svitolina advanced through an extremely difficult opening test in Rome. The 8th seeded Ukrainian required well over 2 hours to get past Alize Cornet in straight sets, 6-4 7-6. Svitolina held her nerve in a lengthy second set tiebreak which ended 13-11 to get back on the winners list after a very disappointing first round loss in Madrid to Saisai Zheng.

Mona Barthel claimed straight set wins over Maria Sakkari and Varvara Lepchenko to enter the main draw where she started with a 6-1 3-6 6-3 win over Peng Shuai before securing a third round showdown with Elina Svitolina thanks to a 6-3 6-4 win over Qiang Wang.

Elina Svitolina holds a 2-1 head-to-head record over Barthel, the pair haven’t played in almost three years. Svitolina won their most recent match 6-4 6-4 on clay in Nuremburg in 2014.

Despite Barthel’s great form heading into this match, Svitolina should have the edge here. Both Svitolina and Barthel are most comfortable on a clay court so this should be a high quality match. Both are very solid from the baselines with the ability to hit big when required, Svitolina has far better movement and is mentally tougher in big moments. Svitolina is likely to outlast Barthel in the majority of rallies and should be too good for the German on this occasion.

Prediction: Elina Svitolina to defeat Mona Barthel in 2 sets

  1. Mona Barthel can defeat Elina Svitolina in 2 or 3.

Elina’s form is going down slowly proly because she is tired after her last big win/tournament at Istanbul! Proof= Her struggles to win in the last 2 matches after the Istanbul win. And Mona is a far, far… stronger player than Zheng and Cornet.

Besides, Mona is on a fantastic streak and confidence. So mona’s win is a no brainer. Elina being a fighter, will fight hard and go down in 2 or 3 depending on energy left post Istanbul!

Let’s see what happens as upsets are common in tennis!

  2. ….looks like Svitolina is still having lots of energy post Istanbul. After losing the 1st set 6-3, Elina has come back strong in 2nd(with 6-0!) and 3rd set(6-0)! Wow! Can’t figure out why Barthel blanked out of the match in the 2nd and 3rd set after winning the 1st set like a top player! Does anyone have a solid reason for that? Or is Svitolina trying to prove me wrong!? LOL

Svitolina playing very motivated? Is she eyeing another title?

Can Svitolina beat Halep? I Doubt it. Let’s go Halep! Lets win 2017 Rome and the French Open titles!

    • Strange scoreline, not too surprising as Svitolina always fights no matter the score and can eventually ware down an opponent, looks like Barthel ran out of ideas.
