Roland Garros, ??? R1 Preview + Prediction
(5) ?? Elina Svitolina vs ?? Yaroslava Shvedova

Elina Svitolina enters Roland Garros on a high, the Ukrainian arrives at Roland Garros with newfound expectations at this level and has emerged as a genuine contender to win the title. Svitolina had the perfect preparation for Paris, winning the biggest title of her career at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia. On the other her first round opponent, Yaroslava Shvedova has really struggled in 2017 but still looms as a dangerous opponent and will take some confidence into this match knowing that she defeated Svitolina in their only previous meeting at Wimbledon last year.

Elina Svitolina is having an extremely consistent year. The fifth seed in Paris has already won four WTA titles in 2017 which puts her in first place on the Race to Singapore standings. Clay has always been Svitolina’s best surface, Roland Garros has been her most successful Grand Slam as she has made the quarter-finals and the fourth round in the last couple of years. Nevertheless, Svitolina has generally underperformed at the Grand Slam level, 2017 seems like the ideal time for Svitolina to change that, especially on the clay in Paris.

Yaroslava Shvedova is a two-time former quarter-finalist in Paris, the Kazakh will need a severe form reversal if she is to replicate those efforts in 2017. Shvedova has a disappointing 4-9 win/loss record in 2017, well below her usual standards and well below par for such a talented player. Shvedova has shown over the years that she can quickly catch form, so she should not be totally ignored.

Shvedova won the only previous match between the pair, a 6-2 3-6 6-4 win in the second round at Wimbledon last year. A similar result seems highly unlikely here. Svitolina enters this match with form and momentum on her side and should be too solid and consistent for Shvedova, Svitolina will frustrate Shvedova and force the Kazakh to play on the edge. Shvedova is capable and can compete with Svitolina if she is at her best, given her recent form that seems highly unlikely.
