Eugenie Bouchard vs Ajla Tomljanovic, Acapulco R1 Preview

Abierto Mexicano TELCEL, ??? Acapulco R1 Preview
(6) ?? Eugenie Bouchard to defeat ?? Ajla Tomljanovic

Ajla Tomljanovic will make her long-awaited return to competitive action on Tuesday when she takes on the sixth seeded Eugenie Bouchard in the opening round in Acapulco. Tomljanovic has not played a competitive match in over a year due to a shoulder injury. It is likely to be a tough return for Tomljanovic, but winning or losing will not be her main concern here, just getting through the match without pain would be a win for the talented Australian. Whilst, it is essential that Bouchard claim a victory here.

Eugenie Bouchard will be back in action for the first time since her disappointing third round loss to CoCo Vandeweghe at the Australian Open. Bouchard showed glimpses of her best tennis throughout the Australian summer, claiming some impressive wins in Sydney and Melbourne but ultimately it all ended in disappointment for Bouchard. The Canadian will be looking to get a few matches under her belt this week before turning her attention to Indian Wells and Miami, positive momentum is very important for someone like Bouchard.

Tomljanovic was always one of the most talented players in her age group but her career has been rocked by injury over the last couple of years. Hopefully all those problems are behind the adopted Aussie. Tomljanovic had shoulder surgery last year and has not rushed back, giving herself ample time to recover, it will be interesting to see the type of level Tomljanovic can produce at this stage in her comeback.

This will be the first career meeting between Bouchard and Tomljanovic. Clearly, Bouchard will be expected to win this match given Tomljanovic has not played a competitive match in over a year. However, that means all the pressure is on Bouchard and Tomljanovic can play great tennis, so this could be closer than expected. Nevertheless, Bouchard is likely to win this pretty comfortably as she will not give Tomljanovic much time to find any rhythm.

Prediction: Eugenie Bouchard to defeat Ajla Tomljanovic in 2 sets
