Eugenie Bouchard vs CoCo Vandeweghe, Australian Open R3 Preview

Australian Open, ?? Third Round Match preview
?? Eugenie Bouchard vs ?? CoCo Vandeweghe

A fascinating third round clash on Friday at Melbourne Park features former semi-finalist Eugenie Bouchard and the hard-hitting CoCo Vandeweghe. This is an interesting match-up between two ladies that will see this match as a huge opportunity to reach the second week of a Grand Slam. Bouchard and Vandeweghe have both been in good form of late, coming through their opening two matches in Melbourne in straight sets.

Eugenie Bouchard arrived in Melbourne with reasonably high expectations after a strong showing at the Sydney International where she reached the semi-final stage and claimed some big wins including a two set win over Dominika Cibulkova. Bouchard’s opening two matches at Melbourne Park have followed a similar path, a tough opening set followed by a more comfortable second set as Bouchard was able to play more freely. Bouchard started the tournament with a 6-4 6-0 win over Louisa Chirico before beating Shuai Peng 7-6 6-2. Bouchard’s on court attitude has generally been noticeably improved over the last couple of weeks, displaying the determination that saw her reach the semi-final stage in Melbourne in 2014.

CoCo Vandeweghe also followed a very similar pathway in her opening two matches in Melbourne. The American raced through the first set of both of her matches before suffering a second set slump, still managing to come through both matches in straight sets. Vandeweghe eliminated the 15th seeded Roberta Vinci in the opening round with a 6-1 7-6 win before beating Pauline Parmentier 6-4 7-6. Vandeweghe blew a big lead in the final set against Parmentier and lost control of her emotions but was able to steady in the tiebreak and capture a big win.

The only previous match between the pair ended in a 6-3 6-2 win for Bouchard at Indian Wells in 2015. I believe Bouchard will once again get the better of Vandeweghe on this occasion. Bouchard will prevail in this match-up more often than not because of her greater movement and consistency from the baseline. Vandeweghe has a better serve but Bouchard has a great return of serve, making this a bad match-up for Vandeweghe if Bouchard is playing well.

Prediction: Eugenie Bouchard to defeat CoCo Vandeweghe in 3 sets
