US Open, ????? R1 Preview + Prediction
?? Eugenie Bouchard vs ?? Evgeniya Rodina

Eugenie Bouchard will begin her 2017 U.S Open campaign on Tuesday, second up on Grandstand Court against Russia’s Evgeniya Rodina. Bouchard is having another horrific year and has one last chance to turn her fortunes around at a major event in 2017. Bouchard’s opening round clash in New York with Rodina looms as a very pleasant draw for the Canadian. Rodina has been eliminated at the opening round stage of all three Grand Slam events this year. There is no excuse for Bouchard to lose this match.

Eugenie Bouchard continues to be one of the most disappointing players on the WTA tour. Bouchard showed a few positives signs in the lead-up to New York but she was unable to win consecutive matches in the three tournaments she competed in during the U.S Open series. Bouchard competed in New Haven last week where she claimed an easy straight set win over Lauren Davis in the opening round before succumbing to Agnieszka Radwanska in straight sets.

This will be the first career meeting between Bouchard and Rodina. Bouchard’s talent is unquestionable, these are the types of matches that she simply can’t lose. Rodina is journey-woman with no serious weapons. In saying that, Rodina is solid and unorthodox and if Bouchard is having a bad day, Rodina will be good enough to make this very competitive. Bouchard seems to be in a better place mentally at the moment and should be too strong for Rodina, the conditions in New York are perfect for Bouchard’s game.

  1. Bouchard is a tragedy. She got caught up in all the other BS and didn’t take care of her tennis. I still remember that year when she was making her GS runs, she was a sure fire prospect. Now, you just see this person who cares more about her appearance and social media presence. Times running out on her, sad to say but I don’t see her ever getting back to that form.
So um yeah…I pretty much never bet on Bouchard, completely unreliable. She’ll talk some good $hit though….

    • Fair point. I also don’t think Bouchard will ever make it anywhere near the top again. It does seem that her priorities aren’t right but in saying that I’m sure she works hard and wants to get back to where she was in 2014..
