Eugenie Bouchard vs Louisa Chirico, Australian Open R1 Preview

Australian Open, ?? First Round Match Preview
?? Louisa Chirico vs ?? Eugenie Bouchard

Eugenie Bouchard opens her 2017 Australian Open campaign on Monday with a first round match against talented young American, Louisa Chirico. Bouchard burst onto the scene at the 2014 Australian Open where she made it all the way to the semi-finals. The Canadian will be hoping to replicate that run in 2017 and will be confident heading into the first Grand Slam of the year after playing some great tennis in Sydney on route to the semi-final stage last week.

Louisa Chirico will be competing in her first ever main draw match at Melbourne Park on Monday. The 20-year-old American has only ever won one main draw match at a Grand Slam, on her preferred clay surface at Roland Garros in 2016. Nevertheless, Chirico is one to look out for in 2017 after showing what she is capable of in 2016 with some big results, most notably a run to the semi-finals in Madrid. Chirico arrives in Melbourne without a win to her name in 2017, losing to Svetlana Kuznetsova in straight sets in Brisbane and Cepelova in three sets in Sydney qualifying, not the greatest preparation for a Grand Slam.

Eugenie Bouchard seems to have regained some of her mojo in 2017. The Canadian made a typically poor start in Brisbane where she was beaten in the First round by Shelby Rogers but Bouchard recovered to make the semi-final stage in Sydney where she played some outstanding matches. Boucahrd’s week in Sydney was highlighted by a 6-4 6-3 thumping of the fifth ranked Dominika Cibulkova and a 6-2 6-3 win over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Unfortunately, Bouchard could not bring that form to her semi-final match with Johanna Konta, where she was totally outplayed in two sets. Consistency is still a huge issue for Bouchard, her best is good but her worst is awful, the gap is too big at the moment.

This will be the first career meeting between Bouchard and Chirico. This is certainly a dangerous first round match for Bouchard. Chirico is a big hitter, and that can be problematic for Bouchard if the American can force Bouchard to defend from behind the baseline. However, Chirico’s early season form hasn’t been great and Bouchard looked very good in Sydney, Bouchard should be too classy and experienced here.

Prediction: Eugenie Bouchard to defeat Louisa Chirico in 2 sets
