(1) Eugenie Bouchard vs Mona Barthel
Top seed, Eugenie Bouchard will open her Antwerp campaign on Thursday when she takes on the always dangerous, Mona Barthel.
Eugenie Bouchard shocked the tennis world last week by announcing that her new coach was Sam Sumyk, Victoria Azarenka’s longtime coach. Sumyk is undoubtedly a fantastic acquisition for Bouchard, he will be expected to guide Eugenie to the next level.
Bouchard opened the season with yet another strong Grand Slam showing, reaching the quarter-finals in Melbourne before falling to Sharapova in straight sets. Genie undeniably had a favorable draw, the Canadian was good enough to take advantage.
Mona Barthel stormed through her opening round match in Antwerp. Barthel crushed Klaartje Liebens 6-2 6-0 to set up a second round clash with the top seed.
Barthel certainly has the game to trouble Eugenie, she pushed the Canadian to three sets in their only previous encounter which took place late last year in Wuhan. Eugenie Bouchard prevailed 4-6 6-3 6-4.
Bouchard will be looking to impress her new coach in their first match together. However it certainly won’t be easy, Bouchard won’t have it all her own way but should ultimately come through.
Prediction: (1) Eugenie Bouchard to defeat Mona Barthel in 3 sets
