Wuhan R3: (5) Garbine Muguruza vs (9) Ana Ivanovic
A Fascinating third round match-up at the Wuhan Open on Wednesday sees Garbine Muguruza and Ana Ivanovic go head-to-head for the very first time. Both Garbine and Ana will see this as a big opportunity to claim a big scalp, Garbine Muguruza is currently in a good position to qualify for her first WTA Finals campaign in Singapore whilst Ivanovic would need to win the title this week in Wuhan to be any real chance to qualify for the season Finale.
Garbine Muguruza made a commanding start to her Wuhan campaign on Tuesday, completely dominating Sloane Stephens in a 6-2 6-0 demolition job of the American. Garbine’s victory over Sloane was easily her best victory since Wimbledon. Muguruza is currently ranked 7th in the Race to Singapore, another couple of victories in Wuhan will put her in a wonderful position as she looks to reach her first WTA Finals campaign.
Ana Ivanovic has also been untroubled on route to the third round in Wuhan. The Serb cruised past Alexandra Dulgheru 6-1 6-3 in the first round before recording a 6-0 6-3 victory over Madison Brengle. Ivanovic will be looking to claim a third consecutive victory for the first time since her run to the semi-finals at Roland Garros earlier this year.
This promises to be an entertaining encounter between two of the biggest hitters on tour. I’m going to side with Muguruza on this occasion, I think this is a good match-up for the Spaniard. Garbine will be able to dominate the Serb’s serve and can match Ana’s power from the baseline. Garbine does most things a little better and the added motivation of securing her spot in Singapore should see her get the job done here.
