#BOTWClassic, ??? Stanford QF Preview + Prediction
(1) ?? Garbine Muguruza vs (5) ?? Ana Konjuh

A blockbuster quarter-final clash at the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford sees the top seeded Garbine Muguruza and Ana Konjuh go head-to-head for the very first time. Muguruza made a commanding return to action on Wednesday evening in her first match since claiming her second Grand Slam title at Wimbledon. Muguruza stormed past Kayla Day 6-2 6-0 to setup a fascinating clash against Ana Konjuh. The Croatian secured her spot in the quarter-finals with a solid straight set win over Natalia Vikhlyantseva. It will be interesting to see how hard Konjuh can push Muguruza in what should be the first of many matches between these two.

Garbine Muguruza struggled to deal with success and expectations after winning her first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros in 2016, signs are that things will be very different in 2017 after the Spaniard won her second Grand Slam title at Wimbledon last month. Muguruza seems a much more mature and composed player in 2017, this was highlighted in her impressive 6-2 6-0 drubbing of Kayla Day in her first match after her Wimbledon triumph. Muguruza should probably be considered the best player in the world at this moment in time, it will be interesting to see if the Spaniard can be consistent and maintain a high level throughout the U.S Open series, if so she will be very hard to stop.

Ana Konjuh has had an up and down season and will be keen to build solid momentum over the coming weeks in the lead-up to the U.S Open where she will be defending quarter-final points. Konjuh has made a solid start to her U.S Open series campaign. The 19-year-old benefited from the retirement of Marina Erakovic in the first round after going a set up whilst Konjuh confirmed her spot in the quarter-finals with a 7-5 6-4 win over Natalia Vikhlyantseva. Friday’s quarter-final clash with Muguruza will be a good opportunity for Konjuh to show what she is capable of up against the best in the world.

This looms as a tight clash between two of the biggest hitters on tour. Both ladies possess big games, big serves, big groundstrokes and a willingness to come to the net. Clearly, Muguruza is the form player in the world but she has shown that she can struggle to keep playing at her best from tournament to tournament. I think Konjuh has what it takes to make this match very competitive, however the slight edge has to go to Muguruza who I consider to be the best player in the world at this moment given her outstanding recent form.

Prediction: Garbine Muguruza to defeat Ana Konjuh in 3 sets
