Garbine Muguruza vs Angelique Kerber, Wimbledon R3 Preview

Wimbledon R3: (20) Garbine Muguruza vs (10) Angelique Kerber

A blockbuster third round clash at SW19 sees Angelique Kerber take on Garbine Muguruza for a spot in the fourth round. Another intriguing clash featuring two players with contrasting game styles, the counter punching Kerber up against the big hitting Muguruza.

Garbine Muguruza has been dealt a killer draw. The Spaniard has already overcome two very difficult opponents. Garbine thumped Varvara Lepchenko 6-4 6-1 in the opening round, a confidence boosting start to the Spaniard’s Wimbledon campaign.

Garbine then recorded a hard fought 6-3 4-6 6-2 victory over Mirjana Lucic-Baroni to reach the third round at Wimbledon for the very first time in her career. In a battle between two of the biggest hitters on the WTA tour, it was Muguruza who had the bigger margins, committing far less unforced errors than her opponent.

Garbine remains a threat to the top players over the next week, Garbine loves the big stage, she seems to save her best tennis for the Grand Slams. The Spaniard picked up upset victories over Serena Williams at Roland Garros and Caroline Wozniacki at the Australian Open last year.

Angelique Kerber recorded a 7-5 6-2 victory over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to reach the third round at the All England Club. Kerber’s statistics in her first two matches have been quite incredible, the German has hit a combined 45 winners and just 11 unforced errors in her first two matches.

Angie has now won 7 matches in a row, having claimed her third title of the year in Birmingham in the lead up to Wimbledon. Kerber’s last loss was actually against Muguruza at Roland Garros.

The German is playing with so much confidence at the moment, making her an extremely dangerous opponent for anyone over the next fortnight. Kerber’s game is simply awesome on grass, her lefty serve is very effective and her strong legs make her extremely difficult to be pushed back behind the baseline.

Angelique Kerber holds a 3-1 head to head advantage over Muguruza. However, as mentioned above, it was Muguruza who prevailed in their most recent encounter: claiming a 4-6 6-2 6-2 victory over Angie in the third round at Roland Garros earlier this year. Kerber won the first three matches between the pair, all of those wins came on a hard court.

This will be the first meeting between the two on a grass court, this should give Angie an even greater advantage. Grass is Kerber’s favourite surface, in contrast to Muguruza: grass is the Spaniard’s least prefered surface. Nevertheless, this remains a danger game for Kerber, Muguruza has nothing to lose as she is not expected to win this game, Garbine is very dangerous in that situation.

This is a tough match to call, I’m going to stick with Kerber, the German is in amazing form and will find a way to deal with the big-hitting Spaniard.

Prediction: Angelique Kerber to defeat Garbine Muguruza in 3 sets
