Garbine Muguruza vs Barbora Strycova, Australian Open R3 Preview

Australian Open R3: (3) Garbine Muguruza vs Barbora Strycova

Garbine Muguruza’s Australian Open campaign continues on Saturday when she comes up against Barbora Strycova in the third round at Melbourne Park, this is a fascinating match-up because of the extreme contrast in styles. It will be interesting to see how Garbine handles the different challenges thrown at her by the clever Czech.

Garbine Muguruza has comfortably navigated her way through to the third round in Melbourne whilst several seeded players in her section of the draw have fallen. The Spaniard started the week with a commanding 6-0 6-4 victory over Annett Kontaveit before defeating Kirsten Flipkens 6-4 6-2. Muguruza faced some challenging moments in each match but was smart enough to work through the situation on each occasion. Garbine will need to overcome some more challenging moment on Saturday against Strycova.

Barbora Strycova has also advanced to the third round in Melbourne without dropping a set, claiming victories over Caroline Garcia and Vania king. Strycova’s 6-2 6-4 victory over Caroline Garcia in the first round was particularly impressive, her best performance in quite some time. Strycova will be looking to reach the fourth round in Melbourne for the first time, she will head into this match as a big underdog and therefore has nothing to lose.

Muguruza will enter this match with confidence having won both of the previous matches between the pair in 2015. The Spaniard recorded  a 6-3 6-4 victory in Tokyo and a 6-1 6-4 victory in Stuttgart.

I think Strycova has the game to really challenge Muguruza. Strycova has a tricky game that is capable of brining Muguruza into awkward positons and is capable of drawing errors. Nevertheless, Muguruza should ultimately be smart enough and powerful enough to get the victory here.

Prediction: Garbine Muguruza to defeat Barbora Strycova in 3 sets

  1. When she is smart enough than Muguruza will win in 2 like in all of their previous (2) meetings. Have to expect it from No. 3 player!

    • Yes, you are right… looked at wrong information. I remember those matches actually. The first set in Tokyo was pretty close. I think Strycova will take a set here

      • No I just think it will go to 3… Muguruza is due to lose a set. Strycova isn’t easy and it will be indoors which will help her.

  2. Nope, Muguruza lost. Played so poorly… 🙁

Your predicted semifinalist Pliskova is – once more – already out before the second week. That’s why I can’t see her in Top 10 consistently.

    • Yeah I did think it was a dangerous match for her but I didn’t think that she would play that poorly.

I agree that Pliskova was a let down,I have probably overrated her and now have a very different opinion of her
