Garbine Muguruza vs Barbora Strycova, Eastbourne R2 Preview

Aegon International, ?? Eastbourne R2 Preview
(11) ?? Garbine Muguruza vs ?? Barbora Strycova

Garbine Muguruza and Barbora Strycova will renew hostilities when they collide in the second round of the Aegon International in Eastbourne. Muguruza has generally had the better of Strycova winning 3 of their past 4 encounters, but this will be their first ever meeting on a grass court, a surface that Strycova is more comfortable on. Muguruza brings good form into Eastbourne after reaching the semi-finals in Birmingham last week and will look to build on that result, whilst Strycova hasn’t had the best results of late, a win over Muguruza would give Strycova a much needed confidence boost.

Garbine Muguruza has a big game but has never really been comfortable on grass, that all changed in 2015 when she reached the Wimbledon final and the early signs in 2017 are that she will again be dangerous this grass court season. Muguruza arrives in Eastbourne fresh off a good week in Birmingham, the Spaniard made it to the semi-finals, most importantly she was able to get in a good amount of match practise on the surface that she is least comfortable on.

Barbora Strycova got off to a winning start in Eastbourne, winning a topsy-turvy three set match against Eugenie Bouchard, 6-3 3-6 6-2. Wimbledon has been Strycova’s most successful slam, Strycova made her major breakthrough at Wimbledon in 2014 when she reached the quarter-finals of the event. Grass is Strycova’s most dangerous surface given her crafty game, most importantly her slice and productivity around the net.

Muguruza holds a 3-1 head-to-head record over Strycova. The most recent match between the pair ended in a 6-0 3-6 6-1 win for Muguruza earlier this year in a Fed Cup rubber on a hard court.

I’m going to give Muguruza the edge again here despite the surface favouring Strycova. Muguruza’s extreme power will keep Strycova on the back foot and not really allow her to play her game. If Muguruza is sharp and on her game she will be too good here, if she is off then Strycova has a chance to take advantage. Muguruza’s recent form suggests she will be good enough here.

Prediction: Garbine Muguruza to defeat Barbora Strycova in 3 sets
