Qatar Total Open, ?? Doha QF Preview
?? (4) Garbine Muguruza vs ?? (7) Caroline Garcia
Garbine Muguruza and Caroline Garcia will do battle in the first quarter-final of the day at the Qatar Total Open on Friday in Doha. Both at 24 years of age, both in the top 10, Muguruza and Garcia are two players many expect to be at the top of the women’s game for a while. Interestingly, these two have only gone head-to-head on 1 previous occasion, Muguruza easily beat Garcia in Tokyo last year. Can Garcia avenge that loss or will Muguruza be too strong once again?
Garbine Muguruza has advanced to the quarter-final stage in Doha without dropping a set. The Spaniard has been fairly dominant in each of her victories in Doha, claiming back-to-back victories for the first time in 2018. Muguruza started the week with a 6-3 6-4 win over Ying-Ying Duan before easing past Sorana Cirstea 6-0 6-4. The only concern for Muguruza was her inability to serve out each match at the first time of asking.
Caroline Garcia started her Doha campaign with a tough three set win over Dominika Cibulkova. Garcia led Cibulkova by a set and a break before being forced into a decider. Garcia did well to regain her composure and claim an important 6-3 6-7 7 6-0 victory over the Slovakian. Garcia confirmed her spot in the quarter-finals with a hard-fought 7-6 7-5 win over Ana Blinkova.
The only previous match between the pair took place in Tokyo last year. Muguruza won comfortably 6-2 6-4.
