Garbine Muguruza vs CoCo Vandeweghe, Australian Open QF Preview

Australian Open, ?? Quarter-Final #1 match preview
(7) ?? Garbine Muguruza vs ?? CoCo Vandeweghe

Garbine Muguruza and CoCo Vandeweghe have both advanced to the quarter-final stage at Melbourne Park for the very first time, the pair will collide in what will be a hard-hitting quarter-final clash on Tuesday. Muguruza has somewhat gone under the radar this week despite winning her first four matches in straight sets, the Spaniard knows what It takes to win a Grand Slam and looms as the favourite to progress through the top half of the draw and reach her third Grand Slam final. Muguruza will need to overcome an in-form CoCo Vandeweghe, the American will enter this match full of confidence after eliminating the top seed and defending champion Angelique Kerber on Sunday.

Having reached the fourth round stage at Melbourne Park on two previous occasions, Muguruza has gone one step further in 2017 and is into her fifth Grand Slam quarter-final. Muguruza seems to have adopted a more mature and measured approach to her tennis in 2017 after some difficulties in 2016 after capturing her first Grand Slam at Roland Garros. Muguruza is yet to drop a set on route to the final eight, the Spaniard has claimed straight set victories over Marina Erakovic, Samantha Crawford, Anastasija Sevastova and Sorana Cirstea. Muguruza seems to be improving with each match, her 6-2 6-3 win over Sorana Cirstea in the fourth round was arguably her best performance of the tournament.

CoCo Vandeweghe has had one of the toughest routes to the quarter-final stage in Melbourne out of all the final eight competitors. The American started her run with a straight set win over the 15th seeded Roberta Vinci before claiming another straight set win over Pauline Parmentier. Vandeweghe came very close to a third round exit, trailing Eugenie Bouchard by a break deep into the deciding set, the American showed great fighting qualities to eventually outlast the Canadian and secure a 6-3 3-6 7-5 win. CoCo’s most impressive performance came in the fourth round where she blasted world number 1 Angelique Kerber off the court, Vandeweghe triumphed with a dominant 6-2 6-3 win. It will be interesting to see if Vandeweghe can continue to play at such a high level moving forward in Melbourne and throughout the season.

CoCo Vandeweghe holds a 2-1 head-to-head record over Garbine Muguruza. The American won the first two encounters between the pair, both of which came on grass courts in 2014. More recently, Muguruza was victorious 7-6 6-2 in Cincinnati last year in their only previous match on a hard court.

Vandeweghe and Muguruza both obviously have big games, both are extremely aggressive and always looking to dictate play. Both will have similar plans heading into this match, whoever executes better will win. Whilst Vandeweghe’s form has been great, her ability to stay composed throughout such a big match is still questionable. Muguruza is more comfortable at this level, at this stage of a Grand Slam and has been building up nicely to this match whilst I feel Vandeweghe has probably already peaked at this tournament. I suspect a determined Muguruza will prove too strong on this occasion.

Prediction: Garbine Muguruza to defeat CoCo Vandeweghe in 2 sets
