Garbine Muguruza vs CoCo Vandeweghe, Birmingham QF Preview

WTA Aegon Classic, ?? Birmingham QF Preview
QF #3: (6) ?? Garbine Muguruza vs ?? CoCo Vandeweghe

Garbine Muguruza and CoCo Vandeweghe will renew hostilities when they collide at the quarter-final stage of the Aegon Classic in Birmingham on Friday. Vandeweghe has had the better of Muguruza in the past, Vandeweghe comfortably beat the Spaniard in straight sets at the quarter-final stage of the Australia Open earlier this year and has also won both of the previous matches between the pair on a grass court. A determined Muguruza will desperate to get a win over Vandeweghe here, it will be interesting to see if Muguruza can find a winning formula over the American on Vandeweghe’s most preferred surface, she is certainly capable.

Muguruza got off to a scratchy start in Birmingham, requiring three sets to move past Russian qualifier Elizaveta Kulichkova, eventually winning 6-3 3-6 6-4. Muguruza produced a far more impressive display to cruise past Alison Riske 6-1 6-4 in the second round. The 6th seed will need to raise her level even further if she is to claim a win over CoCo Vandeweghe, an opponent that is becoming a nemesis for Muguruza.

There are high expectation on CoCo Vandeweghe during the grass court season under the guidance of Pat Cash. Vandeweghe’s grass court swing got off to rocky start in s-Hertogenbosch where she was eliminated in the first round by Carina Witthoeft. Signs have been much, much better for Vandeweghe in Birmingham where she has claimed two convincing victories on route to the final 8: a 6-4 6-2 win over Christina McHale and a super-impressive 6-1 6-3 win over Johanna Konta.

Vandeweghe holds a 3-1 head-to-head record over Muguruza. Their most recent match was earlier this year at the Australian Open where a red-hot Vandeweghe won 6-4 6-0. Vandeweghe also won the only two matches between the pair on a grass court, both back in 2014.

There is little margin in a match-up like this on a surface like this. This should be a close match where breaks of serve are hard to come by. Obviously the surface suits Vandeweghe in this match-up but I have a feeling Muguruza can pull off the upset here. Vandeweghe is the player expected to win this match, meaning Muguruza can bring a healthy mindset into this one as she looks to seek revenge for her previous losses to the America. Both players looked really sharp in their second round matches, I’m going to side with the Spaniard here because of her superior consistency and mentality, Vandeweghe is still too hit-or-miss at the moment.

Prediction: Garbine Muguruza to defeat CoCo Vandeweghe in 3 sets

  1. I hope Gabi beats the snot out of Coco, simply because CV is so unlikable (yeah, I know, not exactly a sharp prediction).

That said, both Gabi and Coco looked hot in their previous matches, so anyone’s game.

    • Yes, they were both in good form and yes it would be great to see Garbine finally beat Vandeweghe on grass

  2. Coco has a higher chance of taking this one but then again she’s that kind of a player that can tank a match if things aren’t going her way. Whoever will have a strong start to this match will definitely win but I’m going to slightly side with the American here.

    • I agree that Vandeweghe’s best on this surface is better but as you said her mentality is questionable and I think Muguruza will be extremely focused and determined here, Vandeweghe has not been playing that well lately and I don’t know what she will bring..
