Garbine Muguruza vs Francesca Schiavone, Roland Garros R1 Preview

Roland Garros, ??? R1 Preview + Prediction
(4) Garbine Muguruza vs (wc) Francesca Schiavone

Two Former Roland Garros champions will go head-to-head in a blockbuster opening round match in Paris when defending Champion Garbine Muguruza takes on 2010 champion Francesca Schiavone. Muguruza is one of the great unknowns heading into this tournament, the Spaniard has not really been able to find her best form in 2017, if the fourth seed can recapture her best form then she is a big chance to defend her title in Paris.

Muguruza lived up to her enormous potential in Paris last year, playing an exceptional match to defeat Serena Williams in last year’s final and capture her first Grand Slam title. Muguruza has rarely looked like a Grand Slam champion since that match but her previous results at the tournament suggest she will again be a big contender. Muguruza won the title last year and reached the quarter-finals the two previous years. The Spaniard does have some winning form heading into this year’s event having reached the semi-finals in Rome a few weeks ago.

Francesca Schiavone has shown some vintage form in recent times. The 36-year-old veteran is still a force on clay which was proven a couple of months back as she won the title in Bogota before reaching the final in Marrakech. Schiavone has reached the second week in Paris on 7 previous occasions, most recently in 2013, the Italian will need to cause some major upsets if she is to find herself in a similar position in 2017.

The head-to-head record between Muguruza and Schiavone is split at 1 win apiece. The most recent match between the pair took place on clay in Fed Cup action last year, Muguruza won 7-6 6-0.

It is going to be fascinating to see how Muguruza performs in this match, there is no doubt that she should be winning this match comfortably but this is no ordinary match. It is going to be totally new experience for Muguruza with new pressures, challenges that she can certainly overcome. Muguruza will pound away at the Schiavone backhand, the Spaniards far superior strength should see her storm through this one.
