BNP Paribas Open, ???Indian Wells, R2 Match Preview
(7) ?? Garbine Muguruza vs ?? Kirsten Flipkens
Garbine Muguruza will start her 2017 BNP Paribas Open campaign on Friday with a potentially troublesome second round clash against Kirsten Flipkens. Muguruza has generally made a positive start to 2017 but some injury issues and schedule problems have seemingly held her back in the last month. After some time off, the reigning Roland Garros champion will have her eyes set on a big couple of weeks in the Californian desert.
Garbine Muguruza is one player that the unusual conditions in Indian Wells should suit. The courts are much slower than a typical hard court and balls bounce up nicely. Muguruza had a decent Australian summer as she reached the semi-finals in Brisbane and the quarter-finals at the Australian Open. Muguruza has been unable to get going since them, winning just one match in Doha before withdrawing early in the first round in Dubai. Muguruza will be fresh and ready to go and looms as one of the biggest threats to win the title.

Kirsten Flipkens claimed one of her best victories in recent times to secure her spot in the second round at the BNP Paribas Open. Flipkens came from a set down to defeat an in-form Catherine Bellis 4-6 6-1 6-4. Flipkens showed that her shot-making and craft can still trouble opponents, something Muguruza will be wary of heading into their second round match on Friday.
The head to head record between Muguruza is split at two wins apiece. Interestingly, it was Flipkens who won their most recent match, a 6-3 6-4 win on the grass in Mallorca in what was Muguruza’s first match after her triumph at Roland Garros. I expect Muguruza to be very motivated to do well over the next few weeks, This should be a good match-up for Muguruza on this surface, the Spaniard is simply too powerful and if she limits her unforced errors she will be far too strong for Flipkens.
