Rogers Cup, ???? R2 Match Preview + Prediction
(4) ?? Garbine Muguruza vs (Q) ?? Kirsten Flipkens
Garbine Muguruza will begin her Rogers Cup campaign with a tricky second round clash against Kirsten Flipkens. The fourth seeded Muguruza received a bye into the second round whilst Flipkens will be more match hardened having already played a few matches in Toronto after coming through the qualifying draw. Flipkens has beaten Muguruza multiple times so the Spaniard will be on guard heading into this potentially dangerous second round clash in Toronto.
Muguruza was straight back to work after her Wimbledon triumph. The Spaniard started her U.S Open series campaign last week in Stanford. Muguruza played a couple of good matches as she reached the semi-final stage where she was eliminated by the eventual champion Madison Keys. It will be interesting to see how consistent Muguruza can be throughout the U.S Open series, if she can maintain a high level, she will be one of the biggest threats at each event she competes at.
Muguruza holds a 3-2 head-to-head record over Flipkens. The Spaniard won their most recent match earlier this year, a 6-3 6-2 win at Indian Wells earlier this year. Flipkens has shown that she can trouble Muguruza but given the Spaniard’s recent form and sky-high confidence, I suspect Muguruza will comfortably come through this one. If Muguruza is patient and makes smart choices, she is simply to powerful for Flipkens.
