Garbine Muguruza vs Magdalena Rybarikova, Wimbledon SF Preview

Wimbledon??????? Semi-Final Match Preview:
SF #1: (14) Garbine Muguruza vs Magdalena Rybarikova

Magdalena Rybarikova’s stunning run at SW19 continues on Thursday as she comes up against Garbine Muguruza for a spot in the final at The Championships. Rybarikova has been the surprise package of the tournament, the Slovakian has spent the majority of 2017 on the ITF circuit after a comeback from injury and had never been past the third round of a Grand Slam prior to the event. Garbine Muguruza is a much more familiar site at this stage of a Grand Slam. The Spaniard will be competing in her third Grand Slam semi-final and will be looking to go one step further than her 2015 runner-up appearance. Muguruza is clearly the more accomplished player but Rybarikova has defied the odds all tournament and will be no pushover here, it looks like this one will get right down to the wire…

Magdalena Rybarikova ensured Wimbledon 2017 would be the eighth consecutive Grand Slam featuring an unseeded player when she upset CoCo Vandeweghe to advance to the final four. The Slovakian claimed a surprisingly comfortable 6-3 6-3 win over CoCo Vandeweghe. Rybarikova has now won 18 of 19 matches during the grass court season and is clearly playing the best tennis of her life having arrived at Wimbledon on the back of back-to-back ITF 100k titles on grass. Rybarikova’s most impressive victory as SW19 came in the second round where she defeated Karolina Pliskova in three sets. The Slovakian has also beaten Monica Niculescu, Lesia Tsurenko and Petra Martic on route to the final four.

Garbine Muguruza has played commanding tennis all tournament. Muguruza cruised through the first week, claiming straight set wins over Ekaterina Alexandrova, Yanina Wickmayer and Sorana Cirstea. Muguruza’s toughest challenge came in the fourth round where she eliminated the world number 1 Angelique Kerber 4-6 6-4 6-4. Muguruza secured her spot in the semi-finals with a 6-3 6-4 win over Svetlana Kuznetsova. Muguruza has arguably been the most consistent player at the Championships and now has a great chance to secure a second Grand Slam title given those remaining in the draw.

The head-to-head record between Muguruza and Rybarikova is split at 2 wins apiece. The pair have been involved in some tight matches, most notably a 4-6 6-1 14-12 win for Muguruza at the Australian Open in 2013. Most recently, it was Magdalena Rybarikova who won the only previous match between the pair on a grass court, an easy 6-3 6-1 win in Birmingham in 2015.

Muguruza is a deserving favourite heading into this match but an upset seems like a realistic possibility. Muguruza her the power game to consistently hit through Rybarikova, the match will mostly be on Muguruza’s racquet, if she remains patient and keeps her composure she should emerge victorious. However, Rybarikova’s awkward game is perfectly suited to grass and all tournament she has proven her ability and much higher ranked opponents. This match is likely to go the distance, featuring shifts in momentum throughout. Ultimately, I think Muguruza will prevail because of her ability to take charge of the match more often than not.

  1. Concise well written preview. I completely agree, Muguruza deserves to be the favorite but Rybarikova has already proven she is not to be dismissed, she broke down Karolina Pliskova (new #1) earlier in the tournament and has increased her level of play going forward.
