WTA Finals RR: (2) Garbine Muguruza vs (4) Petra Kvitova
Garbine Muguruza and Petra Kvitova will go head-to-head for the very first time on Friday afternoon when they take to the courts for their final group stage match in Singapore. Garbine Muguruza has gone undefeated in her first two matches and is in prime position to finish on top of the white group. Petra Kvitova kept her semi-finals hopes alive with a victory over Lucie Safarova, however Angelique Kerber is in prime position to finish 2nd in the group.
Garbine Muguruza is sitting pretty at the top of the white group courtesy of straight set victories over Lucie Safarova and Angelique Kerber, the perfect start to the Spaniard’s first WTA Finals appearance. Muguruza has performed at an extremely high standard in both of her opening matches. Garbine fired 10 aces past Lucie Safarova in a 6-3 7-6 victory before blasting 38 winners past Angelique Kerber on route to a 6-4 6-4 victory. Garbine should now be considered the rightful favourite to go all the way and claim the title this week.
After suffering a 2-6 6-7 loss to Angelique Kerber in her first group match, Petra Kvitova kept her semi-final hopes alive on Wednesday with a 7-5 7-5 victory over compatriot Lucie Safarova. The first set was extremely tight, 1 break of serve in the 12th game was all that separated the pair. Kvitova quickly found herself down a double break in the second set but rallied to win 7 of the 9 games. Despite the victory, Kvitova did seem to be struggling physically throughout the match, seemingly low on energy, a bad sign moving forward this week. Petra will need to dig deep if she is stop a red-hot Garbine Muguruza.
Garbine Muguruza will finish on top of the white group with a win over Kvitova, Garbine is still likely to qualify for the semi-finals even if she loses this match. Kvitova will have to win this match to advance to the semi-finals, unless Lucie Safarova defeats Angelique Kerber.
This will be the first career meeting between the pair, adding to the intrigue surrounding the match. Rallies will be at a premium when two of the biggest hitters on tour collide. Garbine’s form heading into this match is far more impressive, Garbine seems fresh and focused whilst Kvitova is certainly not at her best and seems to be struggling physically. Garbine’s preparation for this match has been perfect, defeating two left handers. Garbine should win this one.
