Garbine Muguruza vs Sorana Cirstea, Australian Open R4 Preview

Australian Open, ??? Fourth Round Match Preview
(7) ?? Garbine Muguruza vs ?? Sorana Cirstea

Garbine Muguruza looms as one of the main threats to win the title at Melbourne Park. The Spaniard has made a solid start to her Australian Open campaign, coming through her first three matches without dropping a set and seems to be playing with a more relaxed and mature attitude on court in season 2017. Muguruza will be a hot favourite for her fourth round encounter where she will come up against a resurgent Sorana Cirstea.

Garbine Muguruza has made a very positive start to 2017, the Spaniard may not be playing her best tennis but she is competing well and seems to have improved her attitude, which is arguably more important than her level of tennis. Muguruza impressed in Brisbane a few weeks ago where she won some extremely tough matches on route to the semi-finals before being forced to withdraw. Muguruza has been tested in all three of her matches at Melbourne Park but was strong and composed when it mattered to come through matches against Marina Erakovic, Samantha Crawford and Anastasija Sevastova in straight sets.

Sorana Cirstea’s run to the fourth round in Melbourne is of great significance. The Romanian has reached the fourth round stage of a Grand Slam for the first time since her breakthrough quarter-final appearance at Roland Garros in 2009. Cirstea has gone through a lot in recent years and finally seems to be in a good place where she is able to compete at the biggest tournaments. The Romanian has also come through her first three matches at Melbourne Park without dropping a set. Cirstea claimed a crushing 6-1 6-2 win over Irina Khromacheva before eliminating the 10th seeded Carla Suarez Navarro (7-6 6-1). Cirstea secured her spot in the fourth round with a confidence-bossing 6-2 7-6 win over Alison Riske, a good win in match that was anyone’s to win.

Sunday’s fourth round match will be the very first meeting between Muguruza and Cirstea. Both have very aggressive games and aim to dictate from the baseline. Therefore, this is likely to be a battle of first strike tennis, a battle that really suits Muguruza. The Spaniard is far more comfortable and experienced at this stage of a tournament and will probably raise her level for the occasion. Cirstea hasn’t gone this far in a tournament for a long time and is due for a poor match. I suspect Muguruza will win quite comfortably because of her far superior toughness and experience under pressure.

Prediction: Garbine Muguruza to defeat Sorana Cirstea in 2 sets
