Garbine Muguruza vs Timea Bacsinszky, Wimbledon QF Preview

Wimbledon QF: (20) Garbine Muguruza vs (15) Timea Bacsinszky

An unexpected quarterfinal match-up sees two first-time quarter-finalists at SW19 go head to head, Garbine Muguruza and Timea Bacsinszky. This is a massive opportunity for both ladies to reach the semifinals of a Grand Slam. Garbine has never reached a Grand Slam semifinal, whilst Bacsinszky reached her first Slam semifinal final at Roland Garros earlier this year.

Garbine Muguruza is arguably the form player left in the draw. The Spaniard hasn’t fared well on the grass in the past, however her run to the quarterfinals shows that she can cause damage on this surface just like she can on any other surface.

Garbine’s route to the quarterfinals has been extremely difficult. Muguruza overcame two potentially dangerous opponents in the opening two rounds, defeating Varvara Lepchenko and Mirjana Lucic-Baroni. Garbine then produced a stunning performance to defeat an in form Angelique Kerber in three sets in what was one of the highest quality performances of the tournament.

Garbine reached the quarterfinals with a 6-4 6-4 victory over Caroline Wozniacki. Garbine didn’t serve particularly well in a match that was full of breaks of serve, however the Spaniards punishing groundstrokes were too much for Wozniacki to handle in the end. Garbine’s composure under pressure was a highlight in her victory over the Dane, showing why many are tipping her to be the next big thing.

Garbine is now the first Spaniard to reach the quarterfinals since 2001, the 20th seed has hit 86 winners in her last two matches.

Timea Bacsinszky’s fairy tale season has continued in London. Fresh off her first Grand Slam semifinal at Roland Garros, Timea has now reached the quarterfinals for the first time at Wimbledon. This is a massive achievement, given her previous best performance at Wimbledon was reaching the second round.

Timea has been helped by a relatively comfortable draw. Timea’s best victory came in the third round, where she upset former finalist Sabine Lisicki, prevailing 6-3 6-2 to record one of her best wins of her season.

Timea secured her spot in the final 8 with a 1-6 7-5 6-2 victory over Monica Niculescu. Timea made a horrible start, totally bemused by the unorthodox Niculescu. Timea found a way to turn things around, recording yet another three victory.

In their only previous encounter, Garbine recorded a 6-3 4-6 6-0 victory over Timea in the second round at the Australian Open this year.

This is a fascinating match-up, the hard hitting Spaniard up against the crafty Bacsinszky. I suspect Muguruza will have the edge in this one. Garbine has been so impressive over the last week, dominating Wozniacki and Kerber with her extreme power. If Angie and Caroline couldn’t find a way to disrupt Garbine, I don’t think Timea will have any luck either. Garbine will be too strong.

Prediction: Garbine Muguruza to defeat Timea Bacsinszky in 2 sets
