Garbine Muguruza vs Venus Williams, Rome QF Preview

Internazionali BNL d’Italia ?? QF Preview
(3) ?? Garbine Muguruza vs (9) ?? Venus Williams

Friday’s final quarter-final at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia features an intriguing battle as the third seeded Garbine Muguruza comes up against a determined Venus Williams. All eyes are on Muguruza over the coming weeks, the reigning Roland Garros champion has an opportunity to cause more damage on the red dirt over the coming months, gaining confidence in Rome will be critical for those ambitions. Clay has always been the worst surface for Venus but she has generally played well in Rome and will fancy her chances of an upset here.

Garbine Muguruza arrived in Rome on the back of three consecutive losses, including two first round exits on clay in Stuttgart in Madrid. The Spaniard looked set for another disappointing performance when she was blown away in her opening set of the tournament against Jelena Ostapenko, Muguruza rallied to claim a 2-6 6-2 6-1 victory and went on to back up that win with a 7-5 6-4 triumph over Julia Goerges. Muguruza will be searching for her first ever win over Venus Williams on Friday having lost their previous three encounters.

Venus Williams is on another surprisingly good run in Rome. The American has advanced to the quarter-finals thanks to straight set wins over Yaroslava Shvedova and Lesia Tsurenko and an impressive 6-1 3-6 6-1 win over Johanna Konta. The American’s game has never been suited to clay but her experience and determination still make her a difficult prospect, no matter the surface.

Venus Williams holds a perfect 3-0 record over Garbine Muguruza. All three of their previous matches were however on a hard court, the last of which was in the 2015 Wuhan final where Muguruza was forced to retire down a set and a break.

I suspect Muguruza will be able to claim her first win over Venus here. The conditions undoubtedly suit Muguruza, the reigning Roland Garros champion plays her best tennis on clay and should be at her prime over the next few weeks. Muguruza does just about every better than Venus (on a clay court) and should be motivated to do well here. The same can’t be said for Venus, the American has scrapped her way admirably to this stage but this is surely where her run comes to an end unless Muguruza has a poor night.

Prediction: Garbine Muguruza to defeat Venus Williams in 2 sets

  1. If Mugurza can keep improving her game rapidly, like she has done here at Rome and plays close to error free, she should beat Venus easily who is not only suited to clay but also limited in movement. Finally Mugurza’s power will be overwhelming for venus, I think. Mugurza has to snuff out Venu’s aggressive play by smashing winners and demoralizing venus.

Let’s see how the 2016 and probably the 2017 French Open Champion (needs to tackle halep next) handles venus today. All this subject to Mugurza’s minor left thigh strain/injury holds up.

  2. Yeeee….Y, mugurza won as expected because of the points discussed above. Wtaddict, thanks for predicting Mugurza’s and Elina Svitolina’s win. Thanks for all the deep analysis that you do for all the top woman’s matches and predicting the winners for a long time on your website. We really appreciate your hard work. I do similar analysis on the parallel!

    • Good to see Garbine playing well on clay again, she can be a threat at Roland Garros, at her best she is arguably favourite.. Thank you very much for your kind feedback, I really appreciate it 🙂
