Internationaux de Strasbourg R1 Preview
?? (2) Daria Gavrilova vs. ?? Jennifer Brady
Daria Gavrilova looms as one of the favourites in Strasbourg. The 2017 runner-up will begin her 2018 campaign with an opening round clash against America’s Jennifer Brady. Gavrilova arrives in Strasbourg in fairly good form after a solid run to the third round in Rome which included an epic upset win over Garbine Muguruza.
Gavrilova’s results have not been great in 2018 but the truth is she has been dealt a number of rough draws, especially at the bigger events. The good news for Gavrilova is that she arrives in Strasbourg on the back of winning back-to-back matches for the first time in over 2 months. Gavrilova claimed two hard-fought wins in Rome, beating Natalia Vikhlyantseva and Garbine Muguruza in 3 sets before succumbing to Maria Sharapova in straight sets. Gavrilova’s win over Muguruza was a noteworthy one, Gavrilova looked down and out at 0-4 in the deciding set but rallied to save 2 match points and win in a final set tiebreak, a confidence boosting win.
Clay is Brady’s least preferred surface and that is showing. In 2018 she has not won a tour level match on clay, her most recent result was a 3 set loss to Donna Vekic in the opening round of qualifying in Rome.
The only previous match between the pair took place in Hong Kong last year, it was Gavrilova who claimed a 6-0 7-5 victory.
