Wuhan R1: Jelena Jankovic vs (Q) Heather Watson
Jelena Jankovic arrives in Wuhan full of confidence after claiming her second title of the year last week in Guangzhou. Jelena loves playing in China, both of her titles this year have been in China, the Serb also gets a lot of support whenever she plays in China. Jankovic will open her Wuhan campaign with a potentially difficult first round encounter against British qualifier Heather Watson.
After an extremely disappointing first round exit at the U.S Open, Jelena Jankovic responded in perfect fashion in Guangzhou by claiming the title. It was a tough week for Jankovic, the Serb came through several tough encounters including three set victories over Francesca Schiavone and Yanina Wickmayer. Jankovic played some brilliant tennis in final where she comprehensively defeated Denisa Allertova 6-2 6-0. Jankovic will be hoping to carry her winning momentum from Guangzhou over to Wuhan as she looks to end the year on a high.
Heather Watson made a poor start to the Asian Swing last week in Seoul, succumbing in the first round to Elizaveta Kulichkova. Watson did however gain some momentum by coming through the qualifying draw in Wuhan with victories over Jarmila Gajdosova and Yulia Putintseva. Watson will be more accustomed to the Wuhan conditions heading into the first round match.
This will be the first career meeting between Jelena and Heather, it’s quite difficult to separate the pair heading into this match, both have been very inconsistent in 2015. I think Jankovic has the slight edge, she is slightly more consistent from the baseline and arrives in Wuhan on a high after her great week in Guangzhou.
