Miami Open, ???? R1 Match Preview
?? Jelena Jankovic vs ?? Yaroslava Shvedova
A fascinating opening round match in Miami sees two veterans of the tour go head-to-head, Jelena Jankovic and Yaroslava Shvedova. Both Jankovic and Shvedova have struggled to produce their best tennis in 2017 but both will be hopeful that will change soon, especially after seeing so many of their fellow competitors playing their career best tennis in their 30’s. Jankovic has a dominant record over Shvedova but her recent form suggests that this match is far from a certainty.
Jelena Jankovic arrives in Miami fresh off a bitterly disappointing loss in Indian Wells. Jankovic led Venus Williams by a set and 4-1 before collapsing in the second set, squandering match points and was totally uncompetitive in the third set. Nevertheless, there were some good signs for Jankovic as she was able to get into a winning positon against one of the best performers of season 2017 thus far.
Yaroslava Shvedova is still yet to win a match in 2017. Shvedova has lost 7 matches in a row on tour, the Kazakh will be hoping for a drastic form reversal in Miami. Shvedova hasn’t been playing awful tennis, her lack of wins has led to a lack of confidence and as a result she has lost a number of close matches in 2017. Shvedova was seemingly on track for her first win of the season at the BNP Paribas Open when she led Varvara Lepchenko by a set and a break, however she would ultimately succumb in a tight third set.
Jelena Jankovic holds a 4-1 head-to-head record over Shvedova. Jankovic has won their last three meetings, however it has been almost five years since their most recent match which ended in a 6-7 7-6 6-1 win for Jankovic. It’s tough to see anything other than a Jankovic win here given Shvedova’s recent troubles. Jankovic is not a great match-up for Shvedova in this kind of form. The Serb’s defensive skills will frustrate Shvedova and force errors, I suspect Jankovic will win this quite comfortably.
